Based on a true story. As best as I can tell the real story needs no embellishing.

Although I appreciate greatly what Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg did to capture the authenticity of what happened on that tragic day, I'm a little disappointed that the movie comes up far short of the reality of what Marcus and his teammates went through.

For instance, the movie shows Marcus walking to the village where he was rescued. In reality, his back was broken and he crawled the 7 miles. He also bit off and swallowed his tongue.

Also (spoiler) the movie shows his disappointment witnessing the rescue helo being shot down. In actuality, the fighting was so fierce he never heard the helo being shot down. That is significant in the sense that it tells how fierce the fighting was that he could not hear a helo crashing and exploding.

Not trying to bash the movie, the story is incredible. Peter Berg did a phenomenal job, it's just crazy/sad that the reality was so much more tragic.

Here's some commentary (limited) from Marcus himself:

I really enjoyed this movie. I was surprised Axe was played by Ben Foster.

Surprise
I really enjoyed the first 80% of the movie but thought the last 20% was a bit to "Hollywood". I found out afterwards after looking up some stuff that the last 20% was pretty much made up. The real story was incredible enough, they didn't need to add the cliche stuff at the end.

Agreed. I also don't understand why Peter Berg chose not to show any of the three teammates death's the way they actually died.

I guess in Murph's case not alot of audiences could have handled it.

The guy who actually survived the ordeal said he approved of the movie, thought they did a good job and had no issues with any of it, that he understood some things had to be added/taken to make it work as a movie. FWIW

Okay: Spoiler:

Danny actually died in Marcus' arms. Not on top of a hill. Murph went out on a rock and made the phone call, then crawled back to his fighting position. Marcus said that Murph kept screaming for Marcus to help him (they were best friends) and Marcus couldn't get to him to help him, so Marcus set his weapon down and covered his ears because he couldn't stand to hear Murph scream his name anymore. He said he feels like he was a coward because he took himself out of the fight for those few moments. (He has a different definition of cowardice than I do, I call it being human). Axe, couldn't see anymore because of injuries and the blood. He was leaning against Marcus asking where to shoot when an RPG blast seperated the two. The last Marcus saw Axe he was wandering blind toward the enemy. After the bodies were retrieved it was determined that Axe had actually crawled some 700 meters and died a day or two later.

Surprise, surprise! Ditto!!!

Oh... there were a few things that were not factually correct (like the last 20% of the movie), but that's easy to look past. An incredibly intense, well acted movie. War is hell and this movie grimly reminds us of the fact.

4.75 out of 5 stars.

Wow, that's crazy.

Really good film even with the changes though.
