Not just because of that.. but that is terrible... Looking at what the team is investing in.. They have spent a lot of the Oline but not getting much production out of it. Pugh should have been studied and been a guaranteed lock to be one of our best players for that amount. Only Peterson and Jones make more than him. Reddick is one of our higher paid guys as well... Llupati too but at least he used to be good.

The Cardinals love paying big money for bad offensive linemen.

Justin Pugh
Mike Gruttadauria
Daryn College
Adam Snyder

Some of that was the players, some was the team and the coaching. Gruttaduria and Colledge were both starters for Super Bowl champions the year before we acquired them.
No decent player looks good at all, on a line that falls flat overall. If you want free agents that make an impact, you gotta open the wallet and take a chance.

There were 8 players who made more than Pugh this season.

This season Pugh made about as much as Reddick and Rosen who are on rookie slotted contracts. There is nothing you can do about how much a rookie makes with his first contract.

There are much worse contracts than Pugh's if that is what you are looking for. See Gresham if you want a contract to complain about.

He should be playing LG where he is much better. I think Iupati will be gone after this year & they'll move Pugh over to LG.

He shouldn't be on the team period... unless the goal is to continually have overpaid OL sitting on your bench. Missed 5 games in 2016, 8 games in 2017 and 9 games in 2018. Depending on Pugh for anything next year is as much an exercise in futility as it was depending on him OR Iupati this year... or Humphries for that matter.

But hey... maybe one of these years these chronically injured guys will somehow magically stay healthy!

Looking at total contract value is not the best way to assess when contracts aren't guaranteed.

According to Spotrac, we can (and at this point probably will) get out of the deal after the 2020 season when Pugh has $25.5M left on the deal and only a $4M dead cap hit. That would essentially make it a 3 year/$19.275M contract for a guy still in his late 20s who has had success in the league before. That doesn't seem to be crippling for the franchise -- Pugh's injury concerns cheesebeef pointed out notwithstanding.

Pugh's contract is not any different than the one Keim signed Gresham to. Front loaded so you are taking a big hit if you unload him early. Gresham will finally be expendable come 2019, or at least his cap hit will be less than what his total compensation would be if you kept him. The cap hit for Pugh would be larger if you release him rather than keep him in 2019.
