Well Miguel didn't make the ASG like many had hoped/speculated. So I got curious as to what caused a 1.5 Run drop in his ERA from last year to this year.

It might be an improvement in K/9IP:

Code:
2002 2003
5.46 6.47

It might be the K/BB:

Code:
2002 2003
1.60 2.55

It might be the HR/9IP:

Code:
2002 2003
.585 .350

It's not the defense behind him (DER):

Code:
2002 2003
.729 .698

But one thing that I thought had some of the most influence, the bullpen:

In 2003 Miguel is in the top 10 in bullpen help this year, last year he was in the bottom 15.

This looks to be aabout a .6 runs swing just in bullpen support that leaves about .8 runs for his component stats to make up.

In fact, if you compare Miguel's DIPS ERA from last year to this year, you can see that .8 Runs of ERA dropping from the components.

Code:
2002 2003
4.12 3.33

Very interesting stuff. Nice to know where things come from.

I think Miguel has more giddyup on his fastball this year, which make his other pitches more successful. I never remember Miguel throwing this hard.

If you go to a game where he is pitching, go over to the bullpen and watch him throw. It doesn't look like he's throwing that hard, or putting the effort into like Schill and Johnson (although they throw faster), but the ball flies fast, and the catcher's glove snaps. His changeup has got to be hell to pick up.
