Looks like Caron Butler is out for the year. Do the Suns make a trade?

The Mavs think they can compete for a title this year. I'd dangle Carter as a one year replacement for Butler who is expiring, Alexis Ajinca, and some picks. Maybe Roddy. Do the Mavs own anybody's picks outside there own?

The question now is if Butler's expiring deal actually means something to Dallas. We're not the only team out there that wants expiring deals.

I'm personally not interested in Ajinca or Beaubois on this team, but I would send VC for Stevenson and Butler (both expiring) and let's improve our draft position this year....

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine

Carter for Stevenson, Butler and 1st round pick or cash.

that's a possible deal. Suns can cuy out Stevenson' contract(he's a trouble-maker). Let Dudley to start, Childress the 6th-man.

PRECISELY what I was thinking. It's a no-brainer, IMO. Butler gets to rehab with our staff and if we have something good to work with, we can sign him because we retain his Bird Rights. Right?

I think the mavs want to keep butler around because of his presence for the rest of the year. honestly I don't think they would trade him unless they had a multiplayer deal that included a significant upgrade, but he is old and a knee injury at that age might continue to hamper him.

I just saw an espn headline calling for nash to be traded. the mavs lack dribble penetration in the halfcourt from their guards(especially with beaubois out). while j-kidd is great defensively and in transition...and is great setting his feet. nash does everything offensively. would the suns/mavs consider a deal for nash? the mavs would give up a lot defensively because j-kidd does a lot at that end. i would think they would have to keep kidd. this is pie in the sky, but could kidd and nash play together on the same roster?

a lot of people in dallas are saying that the mavs should stand pat and that they can still contend for the title????? and I understand they are very deep and beaubois has yet to play.

but I just feel like the loss of butler is huge. he gives them 15 per game and is really the only player outside of dirk who you can count on to bring it every night offensively. if his jumper is off he goes strong to the cup every time. terry is just too inconsistent to be dirk's lone double figure scoring sidekick.

Nash back to the Mavs?

I would also suggest that they keep Kidd with whom they could run a dual-PG offense with either Nash or Kidd playing off the ball at any given time alternating randomly. Traps would be ineffective (speaking of traps, I haven't seen a good trap team since the 90's Sonics).

At any rate, the Mavs could run:

Nash-Kidd-Marion-Nowitzki-Chandler

It works especially since Kidd has actually become an effective shooter....

yeah kidd plays off the ball as it is already a lot with barea and terry. since the mavs don't have a above average shooting guard...kidd often logs some of those mins since terry plays a lot. terry will guard the PG and kidd will often guard the shooting guard at the other end because of his larger frame. so i don't feel that the mavericks could really dump kidd for nash. and I doubt the suns would want kidd anyway because they are looking to get younger. they would probably want beaubois and much more with the trade. of corse this is just crazy talk here, but man I would love to see nash in a mavs uniform one last time.

I have watched a bunch of Mavs games last year and this year and it amazed me how deadly Kidd has become from the 3. When he was here he would hit the occasional 3 but really never wanted him to take one.

Yeah, after that summer in Phoenix where he worked hard on his outside shot he became a real threat to get hot from the 3 point line but he was awfully streaky. If he'd been a good outside shooter back then I really think that would have made him one of the 2 or 3 greatest PG's in history. I loved watching him play and although his defense was slightly overrated, it was the best I've seen in a Suns uniform (at the guard spot). Better than DJ's IMO, but a lot of that had to do with coaching.

he's a physical defender which is important in the halfcourt. but at his age now he gives up speed to elite point guards like rondo/ tony parker/chris paul/d-will etc. the mavs often use him to guard 2 guards in the 4th qtr of games. one thing that makes kidd deadly is his rebounding as well. when he rebounds or steals the ball it almost always leads to a fast break bucket. he is old and is no longer the best PG in the league like he once was. but you have to marvel at a guy who is that old and has played that long and still get triple double's.

I know some people are thinking cuban and nellie will make a move and they might considering they rarely stand pat. but I think it will be a minor one if at all...maybe to add a blue collar guy who can at least fill some of the void that caron's absence will leave. i don't think they will be looking to add anyone else in the back court with roddy beabouis in the hole. he is our only answer for tony parker(if there is one). beaubois can average double figures in points.

yeah he really is deadly when he can set his feet and get good lift off. it's tough to defend as well when you have other players that attract a lot of attention and jason moves the ball well.

If Dallas will take Hill for Roddy, then I'm all for it.

Roddy is a good player and it'd be good to have a guy like him.

I don't think the mavs would make that trade straight up because they see roddy as the future of the guard position, but hill would be a great fit for the mavs with butler out. would be cool to see hill and kidd on the same team after all those years.
