My nephew unp;lugged all the lines from my cable modem and router and when they were ;plugged back in I no longer have a wireless connection. If I connect directly from the modem to the main computer I get access. However when I try to connect thru the router I don't get a connection. The lights on the modem all light up when connected directly but only the power and cable lights come on when connected to the router. I bought a new router but it still does the same thing.

Any suggestions as to what is wrong and how do I get it working again.

Thanks

Have you logged into the router and set it up? Depending on the type of router you usually log in via a private IP address 192.168.1.1 and have to set up a few things such as giving your network a "name" configuring authentication..... etc

yes that was done when the router was origanilly installed. It o;perated for 2 years without a problem. I just tried to set up from the cable modem to my laptop, which was set up wireless, but the cable modem doesn't see the ;pc.

I'm having a problem with adding a desktop to my wireless network with one of those USB connectors. Getting a good signal but the computer just keeps getting hung on trying to aquire the network address.

I had the net up on the computer before but the signal was weak and I lost it and so I bought a range extender which shows to be working properly.

Any suggestions on what might be wrong.

Log into your router and see if you are shown as an authenticating device. I don't have much experience with the range extenders.....

How do you log into your router?

The wireless adapter is apparently the problem. May be that the security key is wrong.

Is the security key the same as the network password?

I know these sound like dumb questions but all my experience is with the LAN wired network at my office. I can fix those problems but this has me baffled.

I don't know CRAP about computers.

I heard that certain ghz cordless phones can really mess with wireless connections. Do you have a cordless phone anywhere in the proximity of the computer?

3 of them.

However, in researching the tech BB's I found that connections hanging on "acquiring address" is a very common problem with no easy solution.

The computer I was trying to hook up came from my office and was connected to a wired network. Probably has some configuration problems because of that.

It sure can, on both accounts (cordless phones, and hooked up to wired network). What OS is the computer that you are trying to use? You may need to go in and reconfigure network settings. You haven't tried to bridge network connections have you?

I'm running Windows XP Home Media Center. I tried reconfiguring the IP address, which worked on my new computer at work to connect to the wired LAN router, but haven't tried to bridge network connections on the one I brought home.

BTW: My cordless phones are 5.8GHz
