LEXINGTON — Pat Kelsey checked a lot of boxes during Year 1 of his Louisville basketball revival, but the Cardinals’ first NCAA Tournament win since 2017 will have to wait.
No. 8-seeded U of L fell to No. 9 Creighton, 89-75, on Thursday at Rupp Arena.
The Cards (27-8) and Bluejays (25-10) traded the lead eight times during the opening 8:32. Entering the final 6:20 before halftime, with Creighton up 28-25, the sea of red-clad fans who washed over Lexington rose to their feet — trying to will a team that’ll go down as one of the program’s most beloved in a long time over the hump.
Meeting with reporters Wednesday, coach Greg McDermott and his players said that was bound to happen. They responded with a knockout blow.
Twelve unanswered points — all of them coming from beyond the arc. That snowballed into a 21-9 swing and a 49-34 halftime deficit; from which Louisville could not recover.
The closest the Cards got from there was 12, 73-61, after Chucky Hepburn got a layup to fall with 5:55 on the clock. Roughly a minute later, with the teams trading misses, Kelsey picked up his first technical foul of the season for jawing at official Brooks Wells.
Creighton converted both free throws and got a score on the ensuing possession. And that was that.
Hepburn, in his final game wearing a U of L uniform, scored a team-high 22 points on 9-for-23 shooting. Terrence Edwards Jr. followed with 21; they were the only two who broke double digits.
Reyne Smith, in his first game back from a sprained right ankle injury that had him sidelined since the penultimate game of the regular season, exited the game with 11:37 to play in regulation after appearing to reaggravate the injury. In his final game playing for Kelsey, he finished with five points.
Creighton’s Jamiya Neal led all scorers with 29 points. He and the Jays combined to shoot 11 for 24 from 3-point range after missing seven of their first 10 attempts from deep.
