LSU women's basketball is headed to the Elite Eight for the third time in three years. Kim Mulkey and the Tigers remain alive after defeating NC State on Friday night.
It was a back-and-forth game. LSU won the first quarter 23-15 before NC State controlled the second quarter 25-13. Then, it was LSU's turn in the third, outscoring NC State 21-13. In the fourth, LSU closed the game on a 10-0 run. It was enough for an 80-73 win.
LSU's double-double machine Aneesah Morrow led the way with 30 points and 18 rebounds. She came up big on defense with three steals and two blocks.
Forward Sa'Myah Smith followed up her big performance vs. Florida State with another impact game on Friday. Smith scored 21 points and hit clutch free throws late to extend LSU's lead to three with under a minute to go.
Smith's points were needed as LSU stars Flau'Jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams didn't have their best stuff. Williams scored 17 but was 0-4 from deep. Johnson shot 1-8 from the field and scored just three points. Yet, LSU's depth was enough to get the Tigers the win.
LSU was down five at one point in the fourth quarter. Second-chance points from Aneesah Morrow cut the deficit to three with 5:29 to go. LSU managed to hang around from there, eventually taking the lead.
Up 76-73, coming out of a timeout, LSU threw the ball away and gave the ball back to NC State. With a chance to tie it, a Wolfpack offensive foul gave the ball right back to LSU. The Tigers took care of business from there. A late rebound from Smith put the game on ice.
Zoe Brooks was NC State's leading scorer with 21 points. Aziaha James and Zamareya Jones also scored in double-digits.
This was LSU's second win over NC State this season. The Tigers got the best of the Wolfpack in nonconference play.
LSU will face the winner of tonight's Ole Miss vs. UCLA game in the Elite Eight.
