And I can refute that in 2. Who cares?

The idea was that Han would never have shot someone in cold blood. He changed the scene to match the kind of person Han really was in the rest of the films.

That also doesn't invalidate the numerous other improvements made to the originals. In fact, I will say George didn't take it far enough. I want to see a new CGI Rancor. That scene has not aged well and is beyond bad. I want to see some of the tie fighter fight sequences either cleaned up or redone to get rid of the boxes that show up even on the DVD transfer. I wan't some of the horrible mat painting backrounds in some scenes replaced they are so bad. When my son who is 10 (7 or 8 at the time) asks me why those scenes look so fake.....that says alot.

So you want to watch that new sci-fi flick coming out...oh, my bad, it sure sounded like you wanted to watch a brand new movie. You sure in the hell don't want to watch Star Wars.

Wrong.

Greedo had the draw on him (or so he thought). You're acting like Greedo was an unarmed bar patron or something.

Han was involved in smuggling and had a bounty on his head.

It is a very important scene.

Ever heard of a character arc?

He's one of cinema's most revered characters because of the changes he goes through over the course of the trilogy...not because he was "always the same guy."

He starts out ruthless and materialistic and becomes compassionate.

Without that scene...what he does at the end of the film doesn't mean as much...when he already has all he needs and normally would have left for good...he decides to come back and help Luke.

His character changes even more during the next two films as he becomes more committed to something bigger than himself...the rebellion.
Exactly. I was in first grade when I saw A New Hope for the first time. Even then I could see how important the transformation was. And how much better of a character he was than stupid Luke Whinestoomuch Skywalker.

I am excited for the 3-D versions. I liked all 6 movies, with maybe 2 being my least favorite and 3 being one of the best. I like the changes, it gives me something new to see. I have seen the originals and they are great as well. This update will help bring the magic to a new audience and extend the life of the franchise which is a good thing. It doesn't take away from what the originals were IMO. What he should do is release the origianls and special editions all in a gigantic Death Star sized box on blu-ray to cater to everyone. Once he thinks of how much money to be made maybe he will do it.

By that time, 3D movies will be 20 bucks a pop. And then even more--AT BEST you wouldn't see A New Hope until the end of 2013. By then, the 3D fad will probably be dead, but hey, a family of four can spend 80 dollars just on tickets to see it. No thanks.

Star wars 2-6 were good. 5 is IMO the best. 1 is not very good and meesa wasssa not impressed and almost never watched 2. Saw it on DVD after the fact and went to see the 3rd one in the theater, twice.

Hayden Panettiere....errr, Hayden Christensen was just fine by me. I totally buy him being the dad of that whiny freaking Luke Skywalker...they are the same whiny dudes who think they are the best before they've earned it and can't understand why they can't "be a jedi NOOOOOWWW!!" Yeah, he's not a great actor. Newsflash, neither was Mark Hamil.

It's not like they are messing with the Godfather Trilogy here. Film vs. Movie.

That's a great idea. I'm going to email Mr. Coppola and ask him to redo those in 3D as well.

I can refute that in three words.

Han shot first.

And I can refute that in 2. Who cares?

The idea was that Han would never have shot someone in cold blood. He changed the scene to match the kind of person Han really was in the rest of the films.

BIM=right (even though he is a thread title spellchecking-Nazi!)
Daren=WRONG!

Han shooting first is consistent throughout the Original Trilogy.

Not only did Han shoot first when Greedo had the drop on him in ANH, he also shoot first in ESB when the doors opened to reveal Darth Vader, and he essentially shot first on two occasions during the bunker sequence on Endor in ROTJ.

Lucas changed it in ANH because it was the most egregious action a protagonist made during the Original Trilogy, and he didn't want to potential headache of protests/boycotts as he turned Star Wars into a child-centric money-making machine.

Brand new movie? Yeah because they changed so much it wasn't the same story. Because adding additional scenes in the movie that were meant to be in the movie to begin with are added back in.

That makes sense.

Han shot first at Cloud City because it was Darth freaking Vador. Huge difference then shooting someone in the Catina in cold blood. Not even comparible IMO. Also in the Bunker scene they were trying to take the bunker on a mission. Again...not even comparible. Look I can live with the scene either way. People blow it way out of proportion.

Also suggestiong that Lucas really thought there would be boycotts or protests over that scene is stretching it.

Last but not least, Star Wars was always meant to be a kid centric money making machine and Lucas knew it. That's why he negotiated for control of the toy rights and sequel rights from the get go when the very first film was made. It was an unheard of concession to a director/writer from the studios at the time. The studio thought it was a great deal to avoid a 6 figure raise for Lucas after American Graffiti. Lucas knew the real money was in the toy lines that would follow.

How many times have you seen that scene, because it sounds like you haven't seen it in years. Greedo implies that it's too late for Han to get any more leeway from Jabba, and Greedo even says that he'll enjoy what's to happen, and any rational human being can infer that he is there to kill Solo. Han is a step ahead and doesn't give Greedo the chance. That's a pretty straight-forward scene. Shooting Greedo wasn't "in cold blood" because Greedo was going to kill him anyway. Or at least take him to Jabba.

LOL! They WHY do you think he changed it? I know you don't think it's a big deal, but Lucas spent money to change it--why did he?

No it wasn't. Star Wars was intended as a B-movie that just exploded on the scene.

Okay, let's re-do all the special effects to all the other older movies in history. Yeah, 'cause that's a great idea. I really can't fathom how anyone would argue for re-filming and re-doing as much as you seemingly want in any movie.

Yes....it's been so long...it's been like at least....30 days or so.

We actually agree on one scenario.....IMO he is there to bring Solo to Jabba just as Bobba Fett did later. So, he didn't have to kill him. Maybe saying in cold blood is not the correct way to put it. However, Han probably would have found another way in Lucas's estimation after the fact about the character. Again, I could have lived with the scene either way. That change is blown out of proportion.

Not because he thougt parents were going to come at him with pitch forks. lol.

Right.... because nogotiating for toy rights instead of the six figure bump in salary he was suppose to get was the smart thing to do for a "B" movie that he thought wouldn't do anything for merchandising or amount to a franchise.

Give the guy some credit. He gave up a guaranteed 40% increase in pay for something he thought would make him a ton of money in toy rights. He wasn't stupid. Did he know it would be that big a hit? Nobody did but he obviously thought it would be much more than a "B" movie. He thought there was a huge potential for not only merchandising but for a franchise. So, he negotiated for not only the toy rights but sequel rights in return for giving up a portion of salary.

Yep...sounds like it was always suppose to be a "B" movie with useless toy rights to me.

Huh?? Who said anything about redoing everything? Lot's of the FX stand up to even today's standards. I am strictly talking about the ones that don't. It's not like a bunch of work would be needed. It's not like I want him to turn each movie into a 4 hour movie. lol.

It is clear by the dialogue that Greedo will collect on the bounty whether Solo is dead or alive.

Right after Han says "Over my dead body!" Greedo says "That's the idea. I've been waiting for this for a long time..."

That's when Han says "Yeah, I'll bet you have." and shoots first.

As far as Greedo only being there to take Solo to Jabba (like Boba Fett)...his own words in the conversation go against that. Greedo is a bounty hunter who is out for himself. Regarding the money Solo owes Jabba, Greedo says: "If you give it to me, I might forget I found you."

It's also clear that if Han allows himself to be taken to Jabba, money or not, he's probably dead.

Greedo said "It's too late. You should have paid him when you had the chance." and "Jabba's through with you. He has no use for smugglers who drop their shipments at the first sign of an Imperial cruiser."

You that is not real right? It didn't really happen a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. :)

In a van...down by the river.
3-D technology while wearing 3-D glasses doesn't impress me.....i sat down at a Best Buy for a demonstration and was thouroughly unimpressed. Maybe i missed something....

As far as the Lucas Star Wars money making re-issued, re-mastered,re-released,re-visioned,re-vamped,re-platformed,re-done saga goes.....i agree that its become a bit of a joke.

I love Lucas for bringing me(us) the magic that Star Wars was as a kid.....but i wish he had put out more original material after ROTJ because he was obviously a gifted filmaker.

I don't think the intent is as clear as you think. If you look at what Bobba did, it's obvious that Jabba was offering alot more for him alive. Bobba even verifies as much when Han was frozen saying he was worth "alot" more to him alive. Any bounty hunter was going to go for the bigger pay.

Now factor in the finished scene that was cut from the original star wars and added back in the film with Jabba confronting Han before he left the planet....it's clear to me that Jabba's intention was to intimidate Han to get him the money he is owed.

You must have watched a badly calibrated TV. I went to see the demos of the different sets and was expecting complete crap. I walked away damn impressed with the home 3D technology.

likewise - I was very skeptical of if the technology would look good and even if it did if I would ever want it

I got to watch a sports medley on TV and it was pretty cool and something I think I could do for entire match - was trippy seeing the crowd scan in 3D as well

Still questions about having everyone in the room need glasses, how well it works at various angles and depth, etc ...... but i'm a lot more intrigued than I used to be

There's a new rumor that Lucas is starting to think about sequels as well. Maybe not episodes 7, 8 and 9, more likely 10, 11, and 12 with new characters set far in the future. But take that with an extremely large grain of salt.

I seriously doubt this rumor. That would indicate that he would do 10, 11 and 12 and REQUIRE him to go back and do 7, 8, and 9. You simply couldn't leave that gap.

I think Lucas is done with it. When I watched the interview with him he admitted that filming a trilogy takes a toll on him now that he is older. He said he simply didn't have 3 more movies in him. Now if the above was true, there would be 6 more. I just don't buy it.

If for some reason he did comeback, I wouldn't mind seeing 7, 8, 9 set in the future with maybe cameos from the original cast but focused on new characters. My only problem is that Lucas simply can't write anymore. I wouldn't trust these would be any good unless someone else had a hand in co-writing the scripts with him. Not that I think the new trilogy was bad but it wasn't great either.

Says who? You? If Lucas doesn't want to do a 7, 8, and 9, you can be damn sure they won't be made.

Done with what? Not only does he have the Clone Wars tv show going strong right now, he's also got a live action Star Wars TV show coming and other Star Wars projects, including the 3D conversions. Lucas is FAR from done with Star Wars, because frankly, he's got nothing else left.

Since when has Lucas's writing ability forced him to not do something? You think he looks in the mirror and says, "Why bother? I can't write anymore"? This is George Lucas we're talking about here!

No director is going to skip a bunch of chapters knowing full well the movie going public would expect you to fill in those gaps. Like I said before, you can still accomplish pushing ahead into the future and still call your films 7, 8, 9. It's not a matter of what will and won't be made. I just don't think there is much logic in thinking Lucas would make future chapters without filling in the gaps somehow. That is what drove his decision to make the Clone Wars in the first place and pursue the TV show.

Saying he would film 10,11,12 assumes he has the previous 3 chapters laid out. Sounds like pure speculation.

Done with the films. I thought I was clear. Maybe not. Yes, he is still doing clone wars and the TV show. However, his comments in the interview I had seen were about the grind of filming another trilogy.

Since when has Lucas's writing ability forced him to not do something? You think he looks in the mirror and says, "Why bother? I can't write anymore"? This is George Lucas we're talking about here!

You are stating the obvious. I was simply making the point that I would want to see him get help with the scripts..a la Empire Strikes Back.
