It just occured to me that my generation is going to have a very strange, never before seen reference point to sports.

There is a very good article on the official site about Lyle Sendlein:
http://www.azcardinals.com/news/detail.php?PRKey=3024

In the article they mention that Lyle's father was an NFL linebacker. Robin Sendlein.

Now I get to the point. My thought process was: "Wow, I didn't know that Lyle's father played in the NFL. I wonder what team he played for."

Almost like a light bulb my mind told me he played for the Minnesota Vikings. But, I didn't have confidence in that answer because really, who paid attention to (with all respect to his abilty to make the NFL) Robin Sendlein.

When I google'd Robin Sendlien, sure enough he played for the Vikings.

My thought process was: "How in the heck did I know that !?!?!" I then looked at the years he played. He played from the early 1980's to 1985. Then it hit me that I knew Sendlein from the Nintendo video game "Tecmo Bowl". He was the other middle linebacker playing next to Keith Millard.

It then struck me that I am getting old. :(

BUT, that we are getting to a point in time where guys can be referenced through video games. How else would you know a guy named Cap Boso played TE for the Bears in 1985 ? Would I know anything about Tim Goad, old DT from the Patriots, if it was not for his abiltiy to instantly sack the QB ?

It is not a groundbreaking phenominom, but it is something we have never seen before as a reference.

*** Sidenote: If scientists every find a way for people to acquire and retain knowledge like this (for better purposes then old NFL players I played in video games) we all would be a lot smarter.

Our grandchildren and/or great grandchildren will probably be able to get memory chips implanted in their brains for that very purpose.

Like the science fiction novel where people had something similar to USB ports in their heads to hook into computers.

When I was young i played a lot of historical, epic fantasy type games. I know a lot more Japanese, Chinese, Roman, etc history than I would otherwise because of the names and dates in these games.

Too bad I didn't play more techmo bowl.

I wouldn't have been able to remember that, but I played Tecmo Bowl as well as other classic NES titles(Super Mario Brothers, Zelda, and Mega Man). It was the first video game system I owned before the N64 and XBox. Some of the orginal games are still my favorites and I still miss playing them sometimes. Good times! ;)

Man, Ron Wolfley scored a lot of TDs for me on one of the Tecmobowl games - Tecmo Superbowl, maybe???

My favorite tecmo was the first one. Bo Jackson could literally run back and forth (from end zone to end zone) for an entire quarter. Rod Woodson and Deion could return every punt/kick return for a TD. Lawerence Taylor could line up at DE and drop in coverage v/s Jerry Rice, pick off the pass, and return it for a TD. And NT (insert any name) could automatically sack any non-shotgun pass play by just hammering the "jump" button repeatedly as soon as the ball was snapped. Oh.... and reading plays on defense.... Do you guys remember the massacres when you guessed right on defense? All blockers got tossed in the air and the entire defense would come swarming at whomever had the ball. Was too funny.

you have no ideas how many fights broke out in my house over the unstoppable bo jackson

tied game in the 4th? - give it to bo, let him run back and forth with all the players chasing (never catching) and then when time expires score the game winning TD

of course this wasn't a quick process - started off laughing, then getting a little agitated (just score already!), then really kind of upset (you cheap SOB, this is BS, just score) to violence (fine, if you're not going to score i'm going to slug you)

my favorite play was to take the QB, run backwards and then with the magic of video game arm strength, throw the ball deep to a wide open WR again and again and again since the D would all after the snap then chase forward towards the retreating QB leaving the WR open, LOL
