Here's how I'd do it, since it is happening:

He references his "dad". I can forgive this if the original Richard Dean Anderson MacGyver is the dad and this is a continuation of the family legacy.

His dad is apparently dead. Maybe have some flashbacks a la "Dexter" where he learns the tricks of his trade from the original master?

Maybe dear old dad finally screws up and blows himself up with some Drano and an old tire iron? Nah, that last part was a little too Zack Snyder of me, huh? Or maybe he just thinks his dad is dead, but in the season finale, he learns his dad is alive and the original/son team up for a new adventure!

Or whatever. I haven't given it much thought.

Agree. Next generation type thing I can look past. If this is a true remake....meh. RDA is this character....PERIOD.

Just because it's happening doesn't mean anyone has to actually watch it. Here's a thought--if we stop continually shrugging and saying, "it'll probably suck, but I'll give it a shot anyway" to all this Hollywood diarrhea, the shows will get cancelled. If these shows continually fail, maybe they'll stop making them. I mean, yeah, I know, that's 100 percent wishful thinking, but with all the quality TV anymore, why bother even giving retreads like this a shot?
