3c) Leighton Vander Esch - ILB - Boise State

Love this guy. On my board i have him rated as the #2 ILB for the upcoming Draft. I have Tremaine Edmunds as #1.
Interesting. Over both RoQuan Smith & Rashaan Evans?

Don't be surprised to see Keim draft 6'7" 255lb, DE Marcus Davenport out of Texas San Antonio in the 2nd rd. He fits Keim philosophy to a T: immensely physically gifted, in need of development with huge potential upside and from a program that is not much on the radar.

Some people have him going fairly high in the 1st round, but I just don't see it.

Nice mock.Seems like I have read several scouts question Chad Thomas `s dedication to football.I think NFL.com says he does not put in the work and doesn`t seem like football is a real priority with him. That would be a BIG RED FLAG for me.After the Nkemdiche mistake i hope SK learnt from that screwup.

The article says that DT Maurice Hurst of Michigan only works for a 43 as a 3 technique. It doesn't say anything about Edmunds and the 43. The amazing thing about Edmunds is that he could play any of the 3 LB spots in the 43 or any of the 4 LB spots in the 34. The Urlacher (in his younger more speedy days) comparison is legit, imo.

I don't believe his skills as a music major ( Miami is a prestigious institution in the field of music ed) and accomplished producer, artist and pianist detract from his football acumen. Not exactly a dunderhead in pads.

Nobody said he was a dummy. What it says is that several scouts question his dedication and willingness to put in the work needed as a Pro.Nothing at all about how smart he is.

He made a comment alluding to having a backup plan if NFL doesn't work during his senior season. He has produced songs with Rick Ross and DJ Khaled. I think it was just honest answer to a question, but I can see why some may see it as a red flag. Definitely something that he will get grilled about during the combine. I hope he does focus on his football career because he has a ton of talent.

His ability to rush the passer and ability to run with RB's in coverage at his size reminds me of Kahlil Mack in college. Mack was more refined, but Edmunds does things on the field that are pretty rare. Plus I believe he's still 19 years old!

Jamie Collins is another player that had very similar attributes coming out.

I like the LB out of Boise State.
Leighton Vander Esch.

He is bottom end of 1st, so far. If he slips to 2nd.......

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2018/profiles/leighton-vander%20esch?id=2560232

Fits the New England profile.

Draft Projection
Rounds 1-2
NFL Comparison
Karlos Dansby (early version)
Bottom Line
Vander Esch is a loose-hipped, instinctive linebacker who played in 2017 like he had a GPS tracker on the football. His production totals against both the run and pass are rare for being a first-year starter and with a frame that is primed for more muscle, his NFL ceiling is high. Vander Esch might benefit from a reduced role his rookie season while he improves his play strength and becomes more skilled at taking on blocks. He's an every-down linebacker with very good starting potential and the talent to fill up a stat sheet.
