Magnum P.I. movie

George Clooney & LL Cool JJ Up for Magnum P.I.
Source: Greg's Previews at Yahoo! Movies
Wednesday, March 17, 2004

Greg's Previews at Yahoo! Movies reports that George Clooney is close to signing to play Magnum, P.I., which Universal Pictures and Imagine chairman Brian Grazer acquired the rights to last year.

Also, the site says that LL Cool J may play the role of the series' helicopter pilot, Thomas "T.C." Calvin. The identities of the actors who might play Rick and Higgins are not yet known.

The studio and Grazer hired scribe Michael McCullers to adapt the series for the big screen. McCullers and Mike Myers wrote the second and third installments of the "Austin Powers" trilogy.

Tom Selleck became a star playing Thomas Magnum, a former Naval intelligence officer hired to head security at the estate of wealthy absentee owner Robin Masters. Magnum used the mansion as a base to work his own detective cases, employing the resources of the estate owner that included the signature red 308 GTS Ferrari. Magnum often clashed with estate caretaker Jonathan Higgins.

All I have to say is, "Why?" Is Hollywood so desperate for material that every old TV show in history will eventually be made into a movie? What's next? Green Acres? Petticoat Junction? Sheesh!

Why not just bring back Tom Selleck? He's not looking THAT old, is he?

I thought the same thing. I think Clooney would be horrible in that role. I do like LL Cool J as "T.C." though.

And WTH are they going to make the plot. I think they did everything short of "jumping the shark" in the TV show.

Man I loved that show when I was a kid. I tuned in to see the car and helicopter as much as anything. :D

Thurber to Write & Direct Magnum P.I.
Source: Variety

Rawson Marshall Thurber will write and direct the big screen adaptation of Magnum P.I. for Universal Pictures, reports Variety. Brian Grazer and Imagine Entertainment are producing.

Thurber directed 2003's summer comedy hit Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story for 20th Century Fox. Along with that film's star Ben Stiller and producer Start Cornfeld, Thurber set up a high-concept comedy last week at DreamWorks Pictures.

When Imagine first optioned the original 1980s action series in 2003, Mike McCullers, who co-wrote the last two "Austin Powers" sequels with Mike Myers, was hired to pen a draft.

Tom Selleck, John Hillerman, Roger E. Mosley and Larry Manetti starred in the TV series.

I hope they don't make Magnum a dumbed down comedy spoof. I always liked the seriousness of the show (drugs, murder, espionage, 'Nam, etc). The only comedy came from some of the situations the characters got into and the relationships between them, but wasn't forced like most of the retread comedies tend to be.

JMHO.

Magnum was one of the best shows ever, IMO.

Should just be left to rest in peace.

I disagree, i think it has to be a movie that doesn't take itself too seriously and make fun of all the cheesey things that the show used to do. I think it should be more like the movie starsky and hutch and less like what the movie Miami Vice looks like.

Clooney with a MUSTACHE? I'd rather see Jake Plummer with a porn stach! ;)

Magnum was a Marlboro man. Why not just get the current Marlboro man and be done with it. C'mon, Selleck wasn't THAT great an actor. I watched the show partly for the cheesy acting! :)
