Kevin Smith confirms he's working on a Mallrats sequel

http://www.ew.com/article/2015/03/16/kevin-smith-working-mallrats-sequel

Twenty years after Kevin Smith had us waxing intellectual about whether a cookie stand was part of the food court or simply an eatery for mid-mall snacking, he is resurrecting the debate with a Mallrats sequel.

The director recently made an “I smell a rat…” comment on his Facebook page that led some to believe we would be getting a sequel.

He then confirmed that a follow-up to the 1995 film was indeed in the works when he appeared on the radio show Rock102 Mornings with Shmony & Carolina.

“Yeah, that’s what we’re working on,” Smith said when asked to respond to rumors of a sequel. “It’s half a script right now, and we’re pulling our loot together. We’ve got up until the beginning of 2016. By the time we get to May 2016, we’re going to be shooting.”

That kid will be back on the escalator.

I loved that line so much. When I was a small kid I sat on the elevator and got my shorts/ass ripped up at the bottom. It was quite a big deal, the fire department came and everything. I always felt a certain kinship with that kid from the movie.

And I can still remember riding an old escalator at the Illinois State Museum (back in early 80's) and seeing the after effects of a kid getting a finger ripped off - he was sitting down, finger got caught and ripped off. Still can hear him sobbing and screaming "Daddy, I want my finger back". I get nervous every time I see a kid sitting down on an escalator, and will say something to parents about it.

Kevin Smith’s Mallrats Sequel is Called Mallbrats

http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/439063-kevin-smiths-mallrats-sequel-is-called-mallbrats

It was revealed back in March that Kevin Smith is gearing up for another return to the cinematic universe he launched in 1994 with Clerks with plans for a direct sequel to his his second feature film, 1995’s Mallrats. Today, Smith has taken to Facebook with an image of that project’s screenplay cover page and it reveals the official title: Mallbrats.

“It’s mall or nothing!” Smith writes. “20 years in the making. 113 pages fulla old friends, new jokes and a bloody battle with Stan Lee! This is for you, Jim. Wish you were here.”

The Jim that Smith mentions is Jim Jacks, producer on the original Mallrats (as well as films like Raising Arizona and Dazed and Confused) and a longtime champion of doing a sequel. Sadly, Jacks passed away in early 2014.

Although unconfirmed, the title Mallbrats does suggest that we’re likely to see a younger generation of mall-bound characters in addition to some returning favorites. At this time, confirmed returning talent includes Jason Lee, Jeremy London, Ethan Suplee, Shannen Doherty, Michael Rooker, Renee Humphrey, Joey Lauren Adams, Sven-Ole Thorsen, Scott Mosier, Bryan Johnson, Walt Flanagan, Brian O’Halloran, Claire Forlani and, as himself, Stan “The Man” Lee. Of course, Smith will also reprise his role as Silent Bob opposite Jason Mewes’ Jay.

My neighbor/buddy had his toes caught in one when he was a child. Mangled them badly. He still has issues about it & will not use them. He's in his mid 40's now.

Half of me wants to hate on this, because, damn, where's the originality, and what's the chance it will be quality. The other half of me remembers how much I thought Clerks II would suck, and how easily that movie shot my worries to pieces.

Is everything
Chasing Amy is one of my all time fave flicks, and I really liked Clerks, but I must confess that I find Mallrats to be rather..... boring. I've given it several shots but I just can't get into it and off it goes. Hoping the sequel elevates over the original.

I am with Rivercard. Out of all of Kevin's Smith's movies, I found Mallrats to be one of the most blah of them all. I loved the Clerks movies and Chasing Amy as well.
