Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly celebrates - Reuters/Phil Noble

Nico O’Reilly performed another rescue act to save Manchester City with a late goal at Goodison Park to boost their hopes of Champions League qualification.

The 20-year-old, whose goals prevented an FA Cup giantkilling against Plymouth last month, finished from close range with just five minutes left to earn victory and extend City’s unbeaten run to six matches, their best series of results since the pre-Christmas defeats that plunged their season into crisis.

Pep Guardiola’s team still need to keep ahead of Chelsea and the chasing pack to secure their place among Europe’s elite again. They looked to have left the door open for Enzo Maresca’s team to overtake them before O’Reilly struck. Mateo Kovacic added a second in stoppage time to secure the win.

O’Reilly was the subject of serious interest from Chelsea in the January window but keeping him has been the correct decision. He also scored against Crystal Palace last week and shone in a lacklustre afternoon for City.

City were lucky not to fall behind after James Tarkowski hit the post, while Stefan Ortega saved sharply from Jarrad Branthwaite. But O’Reilly scored in the 85th minute when he tapped in from Matheus Nunes’ cutback. Kovacic then slid in to score the second, latching onto Ilkay Gundogan’s pass to the edge of the penalty area.

Premier League clubs charging thousands for children to be mascots

Clubs are charging as much as £1,800 for children to be mascots at games, prompting fierce criticism from MPs and campaigners.

The most expensive package has surged 157 per cent since clubs previously stood accused of neglecting low-income families in a Telegraph Sport analysis in 2020.

Man City, Bournemouth and Brentford all in action

Good afternoon and welcome to clockwatch coverage of this afternoon’s four 3pm kick-offs in the Premier League.

Brentford, winless in eight Premier League games at home, host Brighton who have not won in four. Thomas Frank’s side successfully held Champions League semi-finalist Arsenal to a 1-1 draw last weekend and the Dane is likely to name an unchanged side today. Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler can call upon defender Jan Paul van Hecke who can play again after serving a suspension.

Crystal Palace, looking to win their fifth consecutive game at Selhurst Park, welcome Bournemouth who are high on confidence following their 1-0 win over Fulham last time out. Palace manager Oliver Glasner has no major injury concerns and could start midfielder Adam Wharton who was a second-half substitute in the 5-0 defeat at Newcastle in midweek. Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth have scored 32 goals away from home so far this season – only Liverpool have scored more (40).

Everton, who have drawn four successive league games at Goodison Park, take on Manchester City who have scored just twice on their travels since a 6-0 win over Ipswich in January. Abdoulaye Doucoure, the hero for David Moyes’s Everton side last weekend, after his stoppage-time winner against Nottingham Forest, has scored three goals in his last eight league matches. Pep Guardiola will be without City’s No 1 goalkeeper Ederson after he was forced off against Crystal Palace which opens the door for Stefan Ortega.

West Ham, on their longest winless run this season – five – take on relegated Southampton who have lost 26 of their 32 league games coming in. Graham Potter has accrued 12 points from 12 games since taking over at the London Stadium and will no doubt be expecting to take all three against the league’s bottom side. All the stats make for difficult reading for Southampton this season, who are also the lowest scorers in the top four English divisions with just 23 goals.
