What are the advantages of putting a WR in motion before the snap? It seems like the Cardinals do that a lot (especially with Boldin), but I would imagine the WR would have more energy to get downfield quicker if he was in a set position.

The biggest advantage is that you have a very good idea what type of defense the opponent is using. If the player moves across with the WR, they usually are in some sort of man coverage. If the defense shifts in the direction of the WR in motion, it is a good indicator of a zone defense.

I would hope our WR would be in good enough condition to be able to go in motion and still be at 100% for the pattern that they must run.
