Manchester City are due to resume training on Friday. The Premier League champions will be one of the last clubs to return under the new training protocols. Pep Guardiola had delayed his return to England following the tragic death of his mother, Dolors Sala Carrio, from Covid-19 last month but the City manager was seen at the club’s training complex on Monday. City’s players and staff underwent coronavirus testing on Monday, with Guardiola’s squad due to recommence group training under strict social distancing protocols on Friday morning. Under the new regulations, only five City players, including a goalkeeper, will be allowed to train on a pitch at the same time in the company of up to three members of staff. City have 10 Premier League matches still to play but, with runaway leaders Liverpool needing just two wins to guarantee their first title for 30 years, Guardiola’s focus ahead of a potential resumption is very much on winning the Champions League. City hold a 2-1 advantage from the first leg of their Round of 16 tie against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu but with European competition not expected to return until late July or August, if possible, Guardiola will have plenty of time to get his players up to speed for then. Guardiola has won the competition twice with Barcelona but not since 2011. Having won the Carabao Cup for a third successive season in March, City also remain in contention to defend the FA Cup, where they face Newcastle United in the quarter-finals.
