Just read Peter Gammons on ESPN.com. Here is what he wrote.

The Red Sox placed Manny Ramirez on irrevocable waivers Monday for several reasons.

Ramirez talked to the club at the end of the season and expressed that while he likes the Red Sox and Boston, he wouldn't mind seeing what there was in a trade, with his home (New York) an enticing option. If someone like the Yankees were to take the $100 million over five years, it would free the Red Sox to make several other moves.

With a number of teams looking to pare payroll, the Red Sox could take Curt Schilling, Matt Mantei and Junior Spivey from the Diamondbacks. Or they could possibly take on contracts from teams such as Houston, St. Louis or the White Sox.

When Rangers owner Tom Hicks approached the Boston ownership about Alex Rodriguez, he was told that Texas would have to take Ramirez. The Red Sox were told that the Rangers had no interest in Ramirez.

When Ramirez talked to Red Sox officials, they offered to let him out of his contract so he could become a free agent. Obviously he declined, as agent Jeff Moorad knows that the current market might bring four years, $50-60 million, in contrast to the five years, $100 million on his existing deal.

Not sure I would want to move on that deal. I would rather try to get Arod.

Like we want his 5-years, $104 million bad attitude. We can get that from Mondy for much cheaper.

Not necessarily a trade with D'backs is indicated.... but if BoSox could dump Ramirez's salary, they'd be able to afford other contracts for missing parts. Still don't see any of this happening.

After reading the article again that is what I thought Gammons meant.

I am not sure Ramirez' personality would be coveted by Colangelo et al. Maybe I am off on this but I cannot believe JC would put up with Manny's act...plus his salary would be too huge.

I guess, upon reading the article though, like Zona said, maybe Gammons wasn't suggesting a trade with the Dbacks. This article is kind of vague.

Um.. I do. Look at what we all said about Mondesi. He did great and didnt have an attutude. For only Schilling and Spivey (Mantei is horrid) thats a great deal. I hope we do it.

Did great? As long as if you mean "did great" when it didn't matter. His batting average with men in scoring position was sub-Grace level, were talking below .200, and same with rbi's in the situation. He'll want way more than we'll pay him.
