Marbury: Keith will fail here

By MITCH LAWRENCE
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

In Knick-land, Latrell Sprewell is out and Keith Van Horn is in - in for the shock of his pro basketball life, according to his former Nets teammate, Stephon Marbury.

"I don't see it working here for Keith," Marbury said bluntly at the Garden last night before he played in the 11th All-Star Classic to benefit Wheelchair Charities. "It's a whole other world here.

"I don't see Keith playing here long. I don't think he'll want to play here long. He's been put in this situation... . The atmosphere and the team is not suitable for him."

Why not?

"You've got to be way tougher than Keith is to play in New York," said Marbury, the Lincoln High legend who played two-plus seasons in Jersey with Van Horn before being shipped to Phoenix for Jason Kidd.

"You've got to be gritty," Marbury added before scoring 35 points for the New York Stars, who lost to the NBA Stars, 149-131. "You've got to be a grinder. Sprewell fits that description. Michael Jordan fits that description. So does Tim Duncan and Allen Iverson. But Keith is not a player who fits that description. I'm just being honest."

Marbury said he doesn't want to see Van Horn fail or be booed. But the latter is entirely possible because he came over in exchange for the Knicks' most popular player.

"It's not just following Sprewell that'll be tough for Keith," Marbury said. "It's just the way you've got to come out on the court from the jump. When you play here, you've got to come out and dominate from the start.

"I hope it works out for Keith. But based on the past, his numbers don't show him being a dominant player. He's a talented player, but he's not a threat like Sprewell."

I know some of us have said it is hard to feel sorry for any guy who is making as much money as these NBA players do. But does anyone else just feel bad for Keith Van Horn?

I hope the NY fans and media eat him alive. I don't feel sorry for Keith making over $10 mil a year to be average.

KVH has never done anything bad to the Suns that I remember so I don't care if he suceeds or fails. Now ask me about McDyess and I hope he fails miserably.

Van Horn is an overpaid role player. He is pretty good at what he does, but he's not worth what he's making.

I kind of feel bad for him. I always thought he was a nice guy.

I really don't understand why Marbury had to blast him like this.

Is saying, "Keith is a good player, and I hope he is sucessful in New York," too much to ask for?

I agree. I get the feeling that Marbury blames Keith Van Horn for a lot of his failure in New Jersey. Still, I wish he had just kept his mouth shut.

What's funny is that we can complain all we want about what he said, but what he said is probably completely true. There is no way that Keith Van Horn will survive in New York. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves.

I don't think that Marbury was saying that KVH is a bad player--in fact, he said he was a talented player, but he is most definitely a finesse player, much more useful on a team like Orlando or even San Antonio.

Chap, I know what he was saying. I just think it was not necessary to blast him. There were better ways to answer the question.

guys i think you are being to hard on marbury here. he was asked how he thoguht kvh would do with the knicks. personally i think he was right now the button with that he said. he even end the quote with his best wishes for kvh.

"I hope it works out for Keith. But based on the past, his numbers don't show him being a dominant player. He's a talented player, but he's not a threat like Sprewell."

i remember people saying the very samethings last year during the draft when the knicks got mcdyess. who is another nice guy (yea he riped the heart of all suns fans by leaving us).
