The Monroe County Region Athletes of the Week ballot for March 17-23 melds the winter and spring seasons.
Bedford’s girls basketball team wrapped up the winter season with a loss in the Division 1 state quarterfinals Tuesday, then spring sports opened the next day for several Region teams.
If the performances in the opening week are any indication, Region sports fans are in for a lot of great action in the spring.

Here are this week's candidates in alphabetical order.
Noah Banas, New Boston Huron baseball: Went 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead a 14-0 rout of Riverview Gabriel Richard.
Collin Brooks, Erie Mason baseball: Collected four RBIs in season opener.
Braxton Ellison, Dundee boys track and field: Beat his previous best by three inches to win the high jump at 6-1 in the EMU Huron Relays.
Max Flint, SMCC boys lacrosse: Logged four goals in the season opener for the Falcons.
Victoria Gray, Bedford girls basketball: Rang up 17 points and 16 rebounds in the final game of her career, a loss in the Division 1 state quarterfinals.
Julia Hughes, Ida girls track: Won both hurdle races, setting a school record of :16.02 in the lows against the wind, and ran on a winning relay in the Onsted Invitational.
Avery Mack, Flat Rock softball: Delivered four hits, including a home run, and five RBIs as the Rams opened the season with a win over Whiteford.
Katie Powell, Jefferson girls track and field: Took second in both the 60-meter dash and the long jump and ran on a fifth-place relay at the EMU Huron Relays.
Alaina Rosensteel, Jefferson-Erie Mason soccer: Netted three goals as a freshman in her first varsity game.
Teegan Simmons, Monroe boys tack and field: Took first in the 400 meters and shot-put at the Ypsilanti Lincoln Spring Indoor Classic.
Sawyer Ulery, Bedford boys tack and field: Won 60-meter hurdles to help his team take second at the Ypsilanti Lincoln Spring Indoor Classic.
Megan Woelkers, Flat Rock soccer: Racked up four goals and an assist in a season-opening win over Riverview Gabriel Richard.
