Underwhelming and out-of-synch. Those are my two observations. Underwhelming in that, unlike Lost in Translation, the lengthy spaces of nothingness, of letting the visual sink in, didn't work at all. Shots lasted seconds longer than necessary, sometimes as much as 10 or so seconds too long. The other problem was the music and dialogue approach; it was incredibly inconsistent. At one moment it's a history pic; another, it's a teeny-bopper flick. The movie couldn't make up it's mind, was too long for having such a short script, and simply underwhelmed. Blah.

Sophia Coppola tries to hard to be artsy and it loses it's taste. I think Lost In Translation was a little overrated, but at the same time was good because of Bill Murray

See, I found Lost in Translation brilliant. Not a film I could watch over and over, but brilliantly written and directed. Sophia Coppola tried to go to the well with the exact same kind of approach this time, and it failed completely, IMO. I'm interested to hear what Chap and Cheesy have to say on it.

Could not agree more. Stout, I thought exactly the same thing.

I just watched it. My opinion is also similar to Stout’s. I found it incredibly boring, and throughout the film I kept wondering what the target audience was. However, I agree with Oscar win for best costumes, all the settings were outstanding.
