TORONTO (AP) -- Freed from the shackles of Miami's half-court offense, Shawn Marion hopes a trade to Toronto will bring a return to the run-and-gun game he once played in Phoenix.
Toronto acquired Marion, guard Marcus Banks and cash from Miami last Friday in exchange for forwards Jermaine O'Neal and Jamario Moon and a conditional first-round pick.
Marion said Raptors coach Jay Triano plans to push the tempo now that the versatile forward has joined the team. Marion said it will be a welcome change from the more conservative offense he played in Miami.
"The game is supposed to be exciting," Marion said Tuesday as he and Banks were introduced to the Toronto media. "I'm tired of playing that boring style in the half court, watching everybody just go up and run plays, call this play. That's boring. The fans don't enjoy it either. People like to see you get up and down, have high-scoring games and dunks and all that stuff. That's what it's about."
Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo, who drafted Marion in 1999 when he was GM of the Suns, expects the four-time All-Star to fit right in.
"It's a chance for Shawn to be a little bit more useful to his team," Colangelo said. "I don't think they were fully maximizing his potential down in Miami. That was maybe a system thing more than anything else. I think the system here will work in his favor."
Marion and Banks join a Toronto team that is last in the Atlantic Division at 21-34, five games behind Milwaukee for the final playoff spot in the East.
It's the second time in the past year that Marion has moved down in the standings in a midseason trade, but he's more encouraged this time.
"It's going to be a little easier than the adjustment I made last year," Marion said with a laugh. "I went from the first-place team in the Western Conference [Phoenix] to the last-place team in the Eastern Conference [Miami]. We're only five games out of the playoffs. It's not unreachable for us. We've got 27 games to go and I think it's very obtainable."
Colangelo called Marion "a better fit" than O'Neal was because of his ability to rebound and defend wing players, two of Toronto's biggest shortcomings.
"Shawn can pretty much guard anybody in the league and has always been, I thought, a very solid defender," Colangelo said. "He's always been underrated as far as the perception of him. He's a very solid defender, solid rebounder and he finds ways to score. I can't think of a better complement to our team."
Marion and Banks will make their Toronto debut Wednesday when the Raptors host Cleveland. The matchup with LeBron James, the league's leading scorer, will be an immediate test of Marion's defensive skills.
"He [James] is definitely a handful for anybody, regardless of what position you play," Marion said.

Wasn't he ranting and raving how happy he was to play on the Heat when he was traded? Now he is saying it was hard to go from #1 to last place?

I'm really interested to see what he gets this summer after expecting 3yr/60M. We offered him 3/45 or something right?

A silver lining in this financial down turn could be more rational contracts, especially at the upper end of the salary scale. The basic, faulty, premise teams have operated on is that, however ridiculous a contract may seem at present, the league's monetary growth will make it reasonable in the future.

I bet this only has an impact on smaller market teams though. The bigger market teams are still going to spend top dollar and IMO create a bigger gap then there is today between the elite.

No.. I dont think that was Fact.. that Suns offered 45/3.

Thats what I thought he was worth. Maybe 60/4.

I dont think the Suns offered 15 million a year extention. I'm guessing here.. but maybe 11~12 Million. Or lower, knowing Sarver.

12 Million dollars is fair for Marion when he was a 17/9 player. When he was a 21/11/2/2/2 player he was worth 15....

I think if the Suns offered him 15 million a year.. he would of accepted.. as long as it is 4 years..

Marion still not happy...BC starting to feel the heat?? I didn't see this posted.

Ten games as a Raptor and already Shawn Marion admits the frustration is getting to him.
"I'm pissed off," he said yesterday after lifting weights. "I am. I want to win. "I don't want to go out there and lose every night. I didn't come here for this. I didn't expect this.

The trade for Marion was supposed to make a difference. It wasn't supposed to be about an expiring contract. It was about this season. It was about making a run. It was about seeing what Marion can do and where he might fit in come the future.
Before that, the trade for Jermaine O'Neal was supposed to make a difference also. But the trading of one for the other has seen the Raptors lose more often as the pressure on general manager Bryan Colangelo mounts, his previous sound judgment now open to debate and, possibly, ridicule.
A succession of Colangelo moves -- trades, signings, firings -- haven't done a thing to make the Raptors better. In fact, the opposite has occurred. They didn't win without Marion and are worse with him.

I don't mind saying I miss Marion. I wish the Suns would have let Marion's contract expire and signed him to a more reasonable salary. He was always playing major minutes for the Suns and frequently out of position. As I recall I read somewhere (maybe on HoospHype) the Suns did try to trade Shaq back to Miami for Marion and Banks before the trading deadline this season. However, Miami reportedly wanted no part of the deal.

His value has plummeted

League insiders believe that Shawn Marion will be fortunate to earn a contract worth $8 million annually on the open market.
Marion, who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, realizes that the current economic conditions aren't going to help drive up his value.
"We do talk about stuff like that, but is the NBA going to fold?" Marion said. "You see people in baseball and football signing these big-ass contracts and I'm pretty sure their attendance went down a little bit. Everyone is taking a hit, but at the same time it's not stopping people spending money."

I was pretty happy that we moved Marion, but for the style we were playing he was a great fit here. The "I want to be the Man" stuff got old. His game since he left has proved that the system he played made him an allstar.

I think this part of Marion's attitude is gone now that he is a small fish in a big pond. I'd like to have him back because he had a tremendous career in Phoenix. He just wasn't a max contract player.

If we start rebuilding in summer, we won't need Marion at all. He is too old and doesn't have any kind of "leadership". Unless Sarver decides to tweak the roster in hopes of one more season.

Meanwhile, we won't have any cap space to sign him as a free agent. Sign & trade? I don't think we have anything to offer them ...

Marion missed like 3 easy layups. I think his roller coaster is diving.

It's beyond my understanding why his game dived so sharply. He is not really old yet, nor with any serious injury. His value is bottomed. At the best, he will be looking for MLE in summer.

Since we might not be able to keep both Hill and Barnes, maybe even none of them. I wouldn't mind to sign him for cheap. But I don't think we have MLE to offer. Unless we abandon Nash first.

The rebuilding/reloading plan in summer will be very complex and tricky.

I hope we can keep either Hill or barnes, coz if marion continues to slide then Kerr would not want him. I have the feeling that Nash would be the first victim of the rebuilding process. A S&T to NY or Toronto wouldn't surprise me. Hope we get a young defensive PG in return.

Marion just doesn't seem happy.

Even after a dunk like:

He just doesn't seem that into it. Walking with his head down, barely acknowledging his teammates who were pumped...
