Sources say the Lakers will continue pursuing a deal with Minnesota for 10-time All-Star Kevin Garnett, despite reports they've been rebuffed, and have rejected a deal for Phoenix star Shawn Marion.

However, league sources said the Lakers will wait out the Garnett saga in hopes they can persuade Minnesota general manager Kevin McHale with the right deal.
The same sources said the Lakers turned down a trade request from Phoenix that would have brought four-time All-Star forward Shawn Marion to Los Angeles for Odom and a second player to make the deal work financially.
But the Lakers balked at that deal, instead offering Kwame Brown, which went nowhere.
Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said he "thought we got close" to making something happen.

Odom + extra for marion. Never heard that one, not sure that would have been a smart move.

Kwame Brown for Marion and he thought he was close to making something happen?

Thank GOD Mitch didn't trade Odom for Marion. I would have burned his house down. Well, Jim Buss' house since he is pulling the strings.

The Lakers probably started that rumor to make Minny think that receiving Odom + Bynum would be better than Marion + whatever since the Suns offered Marion almost straight up.

Why? Marion is a better player than Odom and Marion rarely gets injured.

In Suns fans eyes. I far prefer Lamar.

Mostly, because he can create his own shot and Marion has no clue of how to do that.

Plus, Lamar actually shows up in playoff games and plays better.

True but Lamar also disappears in the regular season for long stretches. That tends to hurt your teams playoff seeding. There is no way I would trade Marion for Lamar at least at this stage in his career.

A player who is a "create your own shot" type of player is useless in the Suns offense. We need players who will feed off of Nash.

Marion is more durable and more productive than Odom. Odom is a similar player to Diaw-a guard in big man's body.

Odom disappears from the roster due to injury, Boris turns to Doris.

In the Spurs series, we desperately needed another playmaker when Nash was a lot less effective than we were used to.

If Lamar played up to his potential more than 20% of the time I might agree with you. He doesn't. Marion can't create his own shot and scores more points than Odom. He's 3 inches shorter and averages the same amount of rebounds (more over his career). He gets more blocks and more steals and he rarely gets injured. He does this while being the third option on the Suns. He's a better player than Lamar.

Oh, and Marion has never dribbled the ball from out of bounds onto the court.

And besides, if he is so much better than Lamar why are the suns offering him for Lamar?

For the record, I don't think Lamar would be very good in the Suns system...he needs the ball to create and be effective. He's good for the tri. While Marion can hit the spot up jumper, he would not be effective in the tri. His skill set is perfect for the Suns offense.

And I think Lamar is a far better basketball player than Marion. Passing, shooting (especially midrange), dribbling, creating for himself and others all go to Lamar. Marion gets a small edge in rebounding and is a better defender (though overhyped).

And lastly, when they match up against each other, Lamar owns Marion every time.

Oh, and Marion has never dribbled the ball from out of bounds onto the court because he's not trusted to dribble the ball in the first place. :p

the two things above don't have to be mutually exclusive attributes. Just look at Amare, JJ or Boris when he actually gave a damn. We still need one more of those guys. I wouldn't want Odom because he can't stay healthy to save his life, but we definitely still need another playmaker/shot-creator.
