I was Mark Reynolds' biggest supporter, but he is a disaster at 3B.

Especially with Justin Upton on the DL, move Reynolds to the outfield. Either him in LF and Conor Jackson in RF or vice versa.

And, as much as I don't want to see a light hitter at 3B, for the rest of this season, install Augie Ojeda there and bat him leadoff.

Of course, Bob Mediocre will probably bat him leadoff one day, then 6th the next, then 2nd, then 7th, then maybe even 3rd.

He wasn't a very convincing player at LF either. If it makes you feel any better, his defense was worse in the minors. Way worse.

Mark Reynolds has made two errors this 9th inning and three in the game.

And it just goes on.

I think maybe a change of expectations is in order. If the D'backs were playing this way last year, wouldn't it have been about what we all expected? Last year was a happy surprise, this year they've come back down to Earth and are showing their youth. To me there's no sense trading guys, moving them around excessively, or benching them for long periods, we need to let them play through it. If they're still doing this sort of crap late next year or in 2010, then we've got a problem.

Its like every sports movie you've ever seen, right now we're in the whacky phase were a player accidentally trips on a ball and then falls into a trashcan, losing his team the game. Eventually they'll work out the kinks and win in the end. I hope so anyhow :p

Reynolds will never win any Gold Gloves, but he just had a bad night. He's not the rangiest fielder, but he has made some stellar plays this season, too, which are usually forgotten. He semi-made up for his blunders with his double in the 10th.

Reynolds has more errors this season than any third baseman in the Major Leagues.

Which is why I suggested moving him to the outfield, especially with Upton on the DL. Look at Conor Jackson. Alot of careless play at 1B. Not one careless play since moving to LF.

Removing the pressure of his problems at 3B might make Mark a more consistent hitter, too. Wouldn't it be nice if the 40 HR guy we seek for the middle of the lineup is right here?

In the long run, Reynolds isn't going to play in the outfield, so I don't want them moving him there as some short term experiment. I think it could potentially just hurt his confidence when he eventually moved back to 3B.

Reynolds jumped straight up from AA, normally he'd be in Tucson right now. So I'm fine with watching him kick balls out at 3rd and hit below .250. If he's still doing this stuff in August 2009, then I'll start to get agitated.

I agree Hoover. The same people who are angry at Melvin for jiggering with the lineup and screwing up kid's confidence seem to be willing to bounce youngsters all over the place -- as if their defense will never improve with practice in one spot, or their confidence not be affected by total position changes! If you think going from 2nd to 6th in the lineup messes with someone's confidence, how can you imagine a total position move won't?
And now they move Conor to RF? He was just finally getting his footing at 1B. He's slow and doesn't have an OF arm, which is partly why he was moved out of LF at the tail end of his minor league career, but at least he's familiar with LF. LF and RF are not really interchangeable.

Reynolds is like Drew last year -- makes some spectacular plays, goofs a fair number of standard plays. What I'd like to know is who is working with him on his defense? Anyone?

Yep, it's a mystery to me why he's even out there late in games when the score is close. They should always sub him for defensive purposes after the 7th inning.

This whole team together is just not being smart. Its a combination of Melvin not being clever and utilizing speed on the bases plus a number of other things and the players not making the plays to either keep themselves in the game, keep the game somewhat civil, or just help a player win a game. Its a whole team effort that there's no effort in so I guess just to blame Melvin alone is unreasonably unfair. But as we saw with Reynolds, our defense needs help and is seriously hurting this team.
