Mar. 14—WATERTOWN, S.D. — A quick start off the opening faceoff powered the Mitchell Marlins boys hockey team on Friday.
The seventh-seeded Marlins topped the sixth-seeded Aberdeen Cougars 6-2 in the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association state consolation round, avenging an 8-3 loss to the Cougars in the regular-season finale.
Less than a minute after the opening puck drop, Parker Denne found the back of the net for his first tournament goal off an assist from Connor Degen. Later in the first period, Cooper Guenther scored with the Marlins on the power play with Denne and Everett Morrison being credited with assists.
Micah Kranzler put Aberdeen on the board in the second period before Morrison picked up a goal of his own with six minutes left in the period unassisted to give the Marlins their two-goal lead back.
In the third period, Mitchell broke through with three goals in the period to effectively seal the victory. Luke Jerke and Brody Huls scored on power plays while Denne fired his second goal of the game while the Marlins were on the penalty kill.
Huls finished with a goal and two assists, while Denne added two assists to his two-goal game. Guenther finished with a goal and assist for the Marlins. For Aberdeen, Devon Fischbach was credited with the second Cougars goal, as the team was eliminated from the tournament with the loss.
Mitchell closes out the tournament against Yankton in the consolation championship game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 15.
