Marlins sign RHP Kim for second time

August 25, 2007
CINCINNATI (TICKER) -- Byung-Hyun Kim signed with the Florida Marlins - again.

The Marlins on Saturday signed the journeyman righthander, who has been with three clubs this season. He is in his second stint with Florida.

The 28-year-old Kim is 6-6 with a 5.23 ERA in 19 games - 16 starts - with the Colorado Rockies, Marlins and Arizona Diamondbacks this season. He made only two starts in Arizona, posting an inflated 23.63 ERA before being released.

Famous for his meltdown in the 2001 World Series at Yankee Stadium, Kim's career has gone downhill - quickly. He was one of the best relievers in the National League in his first stint with the Diamondbacks from 1999-2003.

Kim was 5-3 with a 4.16 ERA in 14 games - 13 starts - with the Marlins earlier this campaign.

lol well as long as he isnt on the dbacks roster I dont care who he signs with :) But my guess is he wont be on the marlins roster all that long after he gives up 5 plus runs in back to back games

This guy is becoming the Korean Elmer Dessens. Why do teams keep signing him?

If we win the WS, Kim gets a ring for it. That would make three total. Guy knows how to win...

as a marlins fan I like the move - their season is in a tailspin, they've had a lot of pitcher injuries, a lot of talent in the farm that isn't ready yet

he did pretty decent earlier with them - he's entertaining to watch and the season is lost so it's not like the marlins are in trouble if he blows a game

let him use up his arm a little in a lost season

I don't get it. They ditch Kim, he completely blows up in AZ, then they re-sign him?

I don't get it either. He was there for like what, a month? Came to us, had one good inning in two starts, gave up like two million runs AGAINST THE MARLINS in like 2 innings and they re-sign him. :doi:

They picked him up because now the Diamondbacks are paying everything left on his salary except for the prorated minimum.

How did the Marlins win 2 World Series? Seriously, how? I haven't seen them make any trade that was aggressive in years. They should have dealt Dontrel Willis to us last year - then they would have a least a few good prospects. Now, if they want a trade, it will be for MUCH LESS.

That franchise makes me scratch my head. Do they have a plan at all?

First time was the all free agent team, second was with the talent acquired from trading the all free agent team away.

Josh Beckett for Hanley Ramirez was pretty aggressive and looks good for both teams now. The Marlins plan is to build from within and save money until they can either get a new stadium or relocate somewhere (Portland) with a new stadium. I actually thought they'd be better this year but Josh Johnson, Anibel Sanchez, D-Train, and Scot Olsen (all of whom are young and looked good last year) all decided to implode in 2007 whether from injuries or whatever else.

last year all the young pitchers clicked - this year they didn't

the system is still loaded with arms

if by aggressive trades you mean big names, then no - however, they've made many very solid trades that have helped win championships

in 2003 they knew they had some good young talent rising from the 1998 firesale and made a move for pudge rodriguez - then they traded for ugeth urbina midseason to shore up the closer position

pudge went to the tigers but the marlins tried to keep some momentum going by bringing in loduca and making a midterm move for guillermo mota

they also brought in mark redman & jeff conine - these deals cost them some prospects, including adrian gonzalez

they couldn't keep the fire burning, hit the normal revenue issues and sold off again - which restocked the system

there is a lot of young talent in this organization

cabrera and ramirez are young superstars - hermida has disapointed, jacobs hasn't really panned out that great, uggla has exceeded expectations, willingham has been solid

major needs right now are C, CF and a healthy staff - last year the staff was healthy and the team played around .500 ball despite no offense

they are building a lot of good things - however, until they can secure a solid revenue stream it's going to always be the cycle of having to drop players for less than they are worth

maybe a little - i don't think girardi did anything too magical last year - he helped keep some of the young guys in check, but also was a little bullheaded in a bad way

fredi seems to be overwhelmed a little bit at times and i'm not sold on his bullpen management
