The highest paid at key NFL positions is constantly changing, and just one week after, Myles Garrett became the highest-paid non-QB in the NFL after he agreed to an extension with the Browns. That distinction was short-lived after Ja'Marr Chase agreed to a four-year, $161 million deal that includes $112 million guaranteed, while Tee Higgins agreed to a four-year, $115 million contract that is guaranteed for the first two years. Cornerbacks and safeties are responsible for slowing those guys down, and another cornerback reset the market.
Days after Jaycee Horn signed a massive extension with the Panthers, All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. has a new deal with the Houston Texans, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 23-year-old corner has agreed to a three-year, $90 million extension. Stingley's deal includes $89 million in guaranteed money and a $30 million base salary, making him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history.
Marlon Humphrey knows something about being the highest paid at his positions, and his teammate Kyle Hamilton will reshape the safety market shortly. Last May, Tampa Bay inked Antoine Winfield Jr. to a four-year contract worth $84.1M, with $45M fully guaranteed and an average of $21 million per season.
Winfield Jr. is now the NFL's highest-paid defensive back and the first safety to hold that distinction after he logged 122 tackles, 12 passes defended, six sacks, a league-best six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and three interceptions in 2023.
Hamilton was the youngest defensive starter named to the Pro Bowl, quickly emerging as the NFL's premier safety in his second season. Hamilton plays with poise and maturity while allowing new Ravens DC Zach Orr to implement a dynamic and versatile scheme with multiple safeties on the field.
When the day that Hamilton is the highest-paid player arrives, his teammate and Ravens cornerback, Humphrey, will look to add even more responsibility to the dynamic's safeties growing list of responsibilities.
Hamilton is only a year older or the same age as five defensive backs selected in the 2024 NFL draft, including new teammate Beau Brade. Only Brian Branch of the Lions can offer similar potential and versatility, and Hamilton will surely exceed the $70 million contract given to former teammate Marcus Williams. The 2024 season was Hamilton's third year in the league, meaning he's eligible for a contract extension with two years left on his deal, including the fifth-year option.
Of the five highest-paid safeties currently in the NFL, only Derwin James, Minkah Fitzpatrick, and Winfield Jr. are more accomplished, meaning Hamilton could be the first $100 million safety in NFL history.
