FAULK CALLS IT QUITS

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Rams running back Marshall Faulk will announce his retirement on Monday from the league's 2007 Annual Meeting in Phoenix.

Faulk sat out all of the 2006 season, and worked instead for NFL Network. There were rumors that he would possibly re-emerge in 2007 with the Lions. In fact, Detroit offensive coordinator Mike Martz risked tampering charges by talking about Faulk while he was under contract with St. Louis.

"Shoot, I'd ride a bicycle up to pick him up," Martz said of Faulk.

The 12-year veteran played five seasons for the Colts and seven for the Rams. His arrival in 1999 helped propel the Rams to their first and only Super Bowl win.

For his career, Faulk rushed for 12,279 yards (4.3 average yards per carry) and he caught 767 passes for 6,875 yards. Faulk also scored 136 touchdowns, the fourth highest total in league history.

He was the NFL's MVP in 2000, one year after and one year before the same award was won by former Rams quarterback Kurt Warner.

Per Schefter, the fact that Faulk wasn't on an active roster in 2006 makes him eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2011, in the same year that both Jerome Bettis and Curtis Martin will have their first cracks at getting in.

A little off topic but do you think Jerome is a Hall of Famer?
Nope. Close, but no cigar. BUT because he was well-liked by the media, it really improves his chances.

Isn't he something like 5th on the all-time yardage list?

I say yes.

Yeah, he gets in based on stats. He was very good for a very long time. I also can't think of a better goal line back, or power back to pick up a few yards. It was lots of fun watching at Notre Dame and he had an excellent pro career. Nice to see it happen to a good guy.

I say yes.

Jerome Bettis of the Super Bowl XL champion Pittsburgh Steelers ended his outstanding career as the fifth ranked runner of all-time. Bettis, who served a role player during his 13th and final NFL season, finished his career with 13,662 yards gained on 3,479 carries and scored 91 rushing touchdowns.

I always liked Marshall even though he was a dreaded Ram. He was a complete RB that dominated the game for many years.

Faulk should be first ballot. Bettis and Martin should not be.

Former MVP to announce at NFL owners meetings

Associated Press

ST. LOUIS -- Marshall Faulk sat out last season with a knee injury that threatened to end his career. He'll officially close the door on his playing days Monday when he announces his retirement at the NFL owners meetings.

Faulk was the NFL MVP in 2000 and offensive player of the year three years running from 1999-2001. The 34-year-old helped the Rams win their only Super Bowl after the '99 season. He is ninth on the career rushing list with 12,279 yards and tied for sixth with 100 rushing touchdowns.

"He was great for St. Louis, he was great for the Rams and he made the dome an exciting place to be on Sunday," team spokesman Rick Smith said."But it was just a matter of when he would retire."

Faulk began working for the NFL Network as an analyst last year when wear and tear began to get to his knees. He was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection with seven 1,000-yard rushing seasons and 38 100-yard games, and was the first player in league history to gain 2,000 yards rushing and receiving combined in four consecutive seasons from 1998-2001.

His last 1,000-yard rushing season was in 2001, though, and he lost his starting job in 2004 when the Rams drafted Steven Jackson in the first round. Last year, Jackson began the Rams' first player since Faulk to accumulate 2,000 yards from scrimmage and broke Faulk's single-season reception mark with 88 catches.

"It has been an honor and pleasure to play in the National Football League," Faulk said in a statement. "I'd like to thank all my teammates and coaches with whom I've been associated over the past 13 seasons as well as the fans who supported me throughout the years.

"I gave the game my passion, and it gave me a wonderful career and memories that I will always be thankful for."

Faulk set an NFL record, since broken, with 26 touchdowns in his 2000 MVP season. He played his first five seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and the Rams acquired him for second- and fifth-round draft picks.

Faulk had a career-low 292 yards rushing in 2005, his final season.

As much as I hate the Rams, I've always loved Faulk. And he was a fantasy football BEAST in his heyday. He's a sure bet for the HOF (and I don't base that on the FF comment).

As for Bettis, I say he gets in as well. He was fun to watch, too. No RB his size has had better feet (I want to say light feet, but...). Awesome RB for a loooong time.

Faulk, Bettis and Martin all get in. The only guys with more career rushing yards than Bettis and Martin are Emmit Smith, Barry Sanders and Walter Payton. That's some pretty good company to be in.
