No...Sign him...Now.

He is not stupid. He knows the Cards are in dire straits when it comes to the WR position. According to the article, he is not asking for the boatload initially reported. Unless there is an injury concern that we don't know about as fans, the Cards would be foolish to let MarTay go.

Sure am. And frankly, I don't get what some of you see in Mar Tay. Okay, he's fast, but he drops way too many passes and fumbles every other kick off (seems that way anyhow).

He did not fumble once last year if memory serves me correct. He also had a KO return for a TD (95yds) and a 65 yd TD against SD. It was a slant pattern turned 65 yards. Not many guys can do that.

I think that given our WR group right now, he is a must sign. Sanders has too many nagging hamstring and foot injuries and is up there in age. MarTay has a freak injury (broken scapula) and should be 100%. He is also young and fast with BIG play ability. (See above)

sorry but although i think Martay has "some" upside, and he is a very good gunner on special teams. He is not a very productive WR, and DOES fumble on returns...

I would like to sign him but he isnt worth alot at all...

Let me put it this way, we would be a shade better with MarTay and whole lot crappier without him.

I completely agree. We finally have a QB who can heave it deep for Martay to run under. Martay is easily worth $1.5 million per year to us.

This offer to Jenkins is a lowball offer IMO. I mean compare what they are offering Jenkins to what they paid Tanner and Davis. It's half the bonus and less salary. While Jenkins has his flaws, he's more important to the offense and special teams than those two guys are to the defense IMO. Remember his TD against San Diego last year? He can be an impact player. This is the most discouraging news since we didn't get Colvin. If we lose Jenkins because of this penny-pinching offer, it'll be a step back. Five years, 15 mil was crazy, but what he wants now is pretty fair.

For the amount of time that he's been with us in those roles I don't think those stats are particularly impressive IMO.

I am sort of tired of him but still want him back. Do not want to cut off my nose to spite my face. We need receivers. You do not have to love him if he can catch the ball.

I posted this in a different thread..but I think something that we do not know that is going on here...I am speculating that sullivan may think mcaddley, gilmore and kasper may be better receivers and we are offering martay kick returner money.. we have not been cheap at all this offseason - and we clearly need a veteran wide receiver - and the money martay wants is almost peanuts now that he has come down to reality... some teams are having frank sanders in over martay (carolina, ravens). I am speculating that if you look at film on martay - coaches are seeing something they do not like as far as a receiver goes..which is why teams seem to be offering him kick returner money... If sullivan, mac and graves were as desperate as I think they should be..we should have signed martay last week at his revised asking price...there is more going on here than meets the eye..

Good point. I never thought of it that way. I was thinking that there is more to his knee injury (the one that kept him out of many practices) than we know about.

I do not remember a knee injury...he missed 1/2 of the season because of a broken collerbone (or shoulder)...He could have very well have had knee issues - I do not remember..

Actually it was his scapula. That is "wing thang" on your upper back if I am not mistaken.

I remember MarTay missing some practices because of knee problems too...especially during the beginning of the season. I just wonder if there is more to it than meets the eye.

Good post Pinnacle. You may have hit on something. It would explain some of the happenings.
One thing I keep saying, the Cards coaches and mgmt. to seem to know what they are doing, and I'll trust that they do here too.

Actually, I think if we are only a shade better WITH him, then we are only a shade worse WITHOUT him.

california card..I agree with your statement..but if we do not sign martay..someone will replace the roster spot (as a veteran receiver) and we do not know who that person is yet..I have seen no effort to fill our vacant punt returner position..which in theory will be filled by a wide receiver....makes me want to start a terrance newman rumor..could we be eyeing him at #6 to be our starting corner and punt returner?

tango: normally I would say we are screwing up the martay negotiations..but if he signs elsewhere for minimal $$ - I assume there is something jerry sullivan saw that he did not like..jerry knows martay's abilities better than any other coach in the NFL..and I am sure if he thought martay was worth $3 mil for 2 years we would have seen us sign him last week - that is not enough $$ for graves to veto what his newly acquired offensive coordinator wants..

Hahaha...true in the literal sense. Let me re-phrase my statement. I think that if we don't sign MarTay, we are in big trouble. The boat sinks if you will. If we do sign him, we are better, but it is not like he is a number one WR. The boat does not take on any more water so to speak.

Long story short:

If we go into the draft with our WR group as it is as of 1:16pm March 22, we are in deep doo-doo. If we sign MarTay before the draft, it is not as bad as it seems.

Pete Prisco is right in my opinion, MarTay is the best free agent WR buy out there at the moment...plus he gives another dimension on special teams as a gunner and returner.

My main reason for leaning towards martay for $3 mil for 2 years (even if we think he is an average receiver) is that we badly need special team help. After gilmore and martay went down last season we went thru the roster and found no one who could be a gunner on punt returns..hence the new record of 3 games in a row giving up punt returns for touchdowns. Also..we could use him on kickoff returns..but that position is not that difficult to fill. It is too much for a special teamer..but throw in that he can do a little as a wide receiver and we have tons of $$..sign him up - even if we think he has a limited future as a receiver.
