Some questions are better than others. And then there are those times when a golfer gets an outrageous statement that they're expected to react to. Case in point Collin Morikawa at the 2022 Masters.
“Are you getting married?” a reporter asked Morikawa, who had become engaged nearly five months earlier. Before Morikawa could respond the questioner pressed on. “My friend said, ‘Boys want to get married, their game starts to get rusty. Ladies, when they get married, they win majors. Are you worried about that? Or it was a bad question, or you prefer not to answer?”
With a dumbfounded look of amazement at the questions asked of him, Morikawa laughed and said, “No I’m not worried.”
There are bad questions lobbed at Masters participants and then there was this doozy, which is the leader in the clubhouse for worst question asked by the media.
The 2025 Masters Surveys continue with the media asking about the media.
I haven’t played well enough to get called into the media center but when you guys start asking me (at the flash area) about my bogeys that I made that day it goes sideways fast. It’s always like, “You got off to a good start, what happened on six,” or whatever hole it was I made a mess. Those questions do hurt a little bit.
There was some guy (in 2022) that asked some awful question. It was really weird. It wasn’t even a question. It was a statement that I couldn’t answer.
There’s an Australian guy that gave me a hard time about my clothing last year.
In 2019, I was leading the tournament at the time and the first question was how did it go out there? It was the best round of my career (64), what do you think?
I try to forget them.
All of them!
Something about Tiger.
There are no dumb questions, right? The one I get the most that frustrates me is how media always make it out as if I laid up strategically on every par 5 when I won in 2007. No, I didn't. That wasn't the plan. It just worked out that way. I don't know why it’s documented like that. It wasn’t like I never was going to go for the green in two. On Sunday, I had 191 yards on 13 to the front on Sunday. But I had mud on the ball so I wasn’t going to go for it. So, that one frustrates me but I get it. I was 11 under on the par 5s and won with a total of 1-over 289.
It would be something you asked me. (Laughs). You knew that was coming up, right?
I think the media does a good job of not asking dumb questions there. Maybe it has something to do with Augusta that the questions are a little bit better there.
Does it have to be at the Masters? Can I say all these Masters questions that I have to think on? (Laughs)
