COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – Mateusz Gamrot doesn't like Ilia Topuria's chances against Islam Makhachev at all.
After back-to-back knockouts of Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway, Topuria vacated his featherweight title in hopes of getting an immediate title shot at lightweight champ Makhachev.
If the fight does materialize, Gamrot expects Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) to overpower Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC).
"For me, interesting fight but I don't know, Topuria is a small guy," Gamrot told MMA Junkie. "Islam is a really big guy, and I don't think that Topuria has a chance against him. If you want to fight with Islam, you have to be a big guy, similar like him, because he’s good everywhere. But if your body is smaller than his, you don't have a chance for sure."
Gamrot (24-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC), who saw his pursuit for gold take a momentary halt when he lost a close decision to Dan Hooker at UFC 305, doesn't appear to have too much of an issue seeing Topuria potentially cut the line. The former two-division KSW champion holds a win over former No. 1 contender Arman Tsarukyan.
"He was champion in the featherweight division," Gamrot said. "Maybe this is fair, maybe no. This is politics in the UFC, too many movements."
