COYOTES RECALL MATT JONES FROM SAN ANTONIO
GLENDALE, ARIZONA -- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Michael Barnett announced today that the Coyotes have recalled defenseman Matt Jones from San Antonio – the Coyotes’ top minor league affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL).
The 22-year-old blueliner has compiled 7 assists and 8 penalty minutes (PIM) while playing in all 19 games with San Antonio this season. He ranks 2nd on the team in assists and tied for 5th in points. Among Rampage defensemen, Jones ranks 2nd in both assists and points. He also played in 4 preseason games with the Coyotes in 2005, recording 6 PIM.
In his first pro season, Jones has never played in an NHL game, and this marks the first time in his career that Jones has been recalled to the NHL level. The 6-foot, 215-pound native of Downers Grove, Illinois was originally drafted by the Coyotes in the 3rd round (80th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
Jones enjoyed a successful collegiate career, playing four seasons at the University of North Dakota (WCHA). In 162 career games with North Dakota, he recorded 16-36-52 and 152 PIM. Jones was named an All-WCHA Second Team selection in 2003-04, an All-WCHA Third Team selection in 2004-05 and twice earned a selection to the All-WCHA Academic Team (2002-03 and 2003-04).
The Coyotes return to the ice on Friday night when they visit the Dallas Stars. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. and the contest will be broadcast on KDUS (1060 AM).
