But for Koch, the outing went beyond helping his team get a win. It might have gone a long way to help save his job.

In the not-too-distant future, the Diamondbacks will have some decisions to make about the pitching staff. Right-hander Shelby Miller (Tommy John rehab) and left-hander Robbie Ray (oblique strain) are progressing toward their respective returns and Koch could be one of the odd men out.

Koch's numbers might not be eye-popping – he owns a 3.76 ERA in 55 innings – but he has made nine starts this season and all but one were efficient. In those eight such outings, Koch lasted at least five innings and allowed two runs or fewer five times.

Koch has been better than Miller ever was for the Dbacks even before TJ.

Godley should certainly be the starter demoted when Ray is back.

The question is will Miller be a better selection than any of the rest when he is available?

It will be interesting to see how Torey handles it. Will he go with tradition or talent? I hope he chooses talent, which may or not be Miller.

Put Miller in the bullpen as a "long" reliever. It won't blow out his arm and he can compete for a staring job next spring.
