Is there anyone thinking that the new HC might want to look into the availability of this guy? I know a bunch of folks are worried about losing Big, but we've beaten that dead horse into hamburger. So here's some fresh meat - Starks is a RFA who worked for Wiz and was a solid RT from all accounts I could find (mostly internet sites discussing the 2007 free agent market). But how does Matt being a lefty shake out for the tackle position? Is he too huge to be effective?

Everytime I make a suggestion they get totally blasted - my most severe was suggesting Larry Allen last year (and look at what a terrible job he did for Frank Gore.... LOL). So I'm expecting the typical grumpy Cardinal fans comments, but if Big is gone we need to look somewhere (other than the draft!!!!). I'm with Mitch or whoever else believes Steinbach is someone we should look at. But he's a guard and whoever is talking him up seems to think the transition from guard to tackle is easy..... how long has Davis been trying to do it? 3 years now?

Having Whis is all the input the Cards will need to gauge Starks, but the question is at what price? What will the Steelers tender him at, if they let him hit the market to begin with. Another question is who will play LT? Can Wells make that transition? Even if the Cards drafted Joe Thomas, it's unlikely that he'll be ready to step in right away. I still think they need to tie up Davis, at least until they can shore up his position and then try to get something for him. The other player Whis will have an impact on as far as being on the team is Ross. Maybe he'll tell how the Steelers laughed when the Cards took him.

While I think Starks is a good player, I believe that he would be a terrible fit for us. Starks is the frontside tackle in a run-oriented scheme. If he was to play RT for us, he would be the blindside tackle on a pass-oriented team. Bad fit!

Starks could perhaps play LT for us, but with the same result as Davis. He, too, would get beaten in pass-protection.

BTW.. Didn't you suggest Allen should play RT for us? Someone did and I would still blast you if you believed Allen would be able to play RT for us.

Steinbach also played C and LT for Cincy this year because of injuries. I would like him to considered to come in here and take over the C poistion for us. As for Starks, i don't think Pitt will let him go anywhere.

Max Starks RFA Pittsburgh Steelers

Starks is a starting tackle for a Super Bowl champion. That’s enough in itself to get some teams a little excited about the prospects of acquiring him. The fact that Starks is young, talented, and massive in stature—listed at 6’8”, 337 lbs.—just adds to the excitement pile. Another lineman that shouldn’t be going anywhere as the Steelers will not let Starks go without a fight. The best bet is that Starks will decide he wants to stay in Pittsburgh and sign an extension. If he hits the market, there will be a team or two willing to pay a big amount to entice the tackle to relocate

Let's find out what kind of offense (and offensive line blocking approach) we're going to have before playing "who's out there we can get?"

Will we stay with the stretch approachunder Whisehnunt? Or will we go back to more helmet on helmet stuff? Zone blocking requires more mobility in space. Man blocking can rely more on big, strong, smashmouth guys.

You want starks then prepare to shell out our 1st rounder to get him because that is the level he will be tendered at as a RFA. Now if the Steelers are dumb enough to give him the low tender then we can talk, but chance of that happening is about 1%. But I will never say never.
