D-Backs get Mayne man
Catcher chooses Arizona over Colorado
By Steve Gilbert / MLB.com
NEW ORLEANS -- The Diamondbacks on Sunday signed free-agent catcher Brent Mayne to a one-year deal.
Mayne, who hit .245 with six home runs and 36 RBIs in 113 games for the Royals last season, will serve as a backup to Robby Hammock. The 35-year-old chose the Diamondbacks over the Rockies.
"The offers were virtually identical in terms of their value, but he makes his home in Los Angeles, he's got young children and Arizona is close," said Mayne's agent Barry Meister. "It was a difficult decision."
Over his 14-year big league career, Mayne has batted .265 with 38 homers and 388 RBIs. The veteran is currently on a trip to Nicaragua.
"All he's going to concentrate on is being a veteran presence and receiving well," Meister said. "When (Brenly) wants Brent to play, he'll play. When he's not playing, he'll mentor and he's one of those really solid forces in the clubhouse. He's just going to be a real stabilizing veteran presence."
