I have no problem with McCown and a rookie or two for QBs next year
Me neither, Bert, and I think what might be forgotten with this rumor is how much McCown would most likely be able to help any other quarterback, maybe especially a young one.
McCown has been highly respected and very well-liked for years both on and off the field, and he has earned a reputation for always saying the right things, always doing the right things and always doing whatever he can to help his team, both offensive and defensive. He is a very unselfish man, and several people along his way has told how he has tried his best to learn from every other quarterback and any other coach on his seven teams over the last 14 seasons. For the last seven years he has been a teacher and mentor to every young hotshot quarterback those teams have brought in, starting with Jay Cutler in Chicago. In fact, McCown is still a sort of mentor to Johnny Manziel, trying to get him to straighten out his life.
It is also obvious that he really gets the game and has some very interesting perspectives on it, and that he can communicate it and teach it to other players. In fact, when he got injured last season, Todd Bowles made him a so-called players coach, so that he could still help the team in the best way he was able to. I don’t know what he actually did on the sideline, but I think it speaks to what kind a guy he is. By the way, before the season he was offered the job as quarterback coach by the Browns.
I definitely agree that it would be kind of sad to see them sign Josh McCown to be the starter, at least if it was for the entire season, but if they sign him to be the mentor to a young guy they have drafted, I would be all in.
