McCown Hosts Gatorade Jr. Camp At NFL YET Center
The Arizona Cardinals offered a Gatorade Jr. Training Camp at the NFL YET (Youth Education Town) Center in Phoenix on Wednesday, May 12.
Quarterback Josh McCown and team mascot Big Red coached over 100 children from four ESPIRITU schools, the NFL YET College Prep Academy, NFL YET Elementary, Esperanza Montessori Academy, and Los Milagros in Safford in five non-contact football stations.
During McCown’s first group, the Cardinals quarterback was chagrined when his first half dozen spirals bounced right in and out of the hands of his receivers.
“Oh man, my first group made me look pretty bad out there,” joked the team’s signal caller.
His poor pass completion percentage prompted McCown to start a competition with his remaining groups to see how many completions in a row they could come up with.
“The second group caught twelve in a row, same as my jersey number so easy to remember,” said McCown.
ESPIRITU is the community development corporation for the NFL YET Center. ESPIRITU received a one million dollar legacy grant from the NFL in 1996 to establish a state of the art charter school with an ambitious college preparatory curriculum. The NFL YET College Prep provides a college prep environment for 7th-12th grade students who attain, analyze and create new knowledge.
“This is a very nice facility out here and I think the teens in this community are lucky to have a place to hang out and stay out of trouble,” said McCown.
Following the camp, McCown signed autographs and talked to the group about the importance of education and setting goals.
