He says he would prefer to go to Houston, Indiana, or Detroit.

T-Mac lacks patience for rebuilding team

The star guard said he'll push for a trade if the Magic don't add proven veterans this summer.

By Brian Schmitz | Sentinel Staff Writer

Tracy McGrady would rather quickly relocate to another team this summer than slowly rebuild with the Orlando Magic.

If the Magic can't significantly improve next season by making deals -- moving their No. 1 pick for veteran players, for example -- McGrady told the Sentinel on Friday that he would "probably have no choice" but to push for a trade in mid-July to a Western Conference team.

And, contrary to reports and rumors, it's not the Los Angeles Lakers or the San Antonio Spurs that McGrady is eyeing.

McGrady said from his south Orlando home that the Houston Rockets likely would be his first choice should he and the Magic part ways.

A league source told the Sentinel that T-Mac also would be receptive to the Indiana Pacers or the Detroit Pistons because they've had trouble scoring in the playoffs.

Magic General Manager John Weisbrod says the Magic will continue to do everything they can to keep McGrady in pinstripes.

Asked about a report listing the Lakers and Spurs as teams that interest him, McGrady said, "No, not San Antonio and L.A.

"I don't want to go there. I don't want to go somewhere where everything's already in place. That would be too easy. I want a challenge."

The Magic, as constructed, apparently present too much of a challenge.

Orlando won the NBA draft lottery and rights to the No. 1 pick Wednesday, but McGrady's comments temper that coup.

He reiterated he doesn't believe there is a player in the draft who can improve the team dramatically (most experts agree). The top overall draft choice represents the most leverage the Magic have in upgrading the team through trades, considering they have no salary-cap room and most of their players under contract have little market value.

McGrady would rather the Magic trade the pick -- likely Connecticut center Emeka Okafor -- in return for some veteran players who might provide immediate help. "I don't want to be here rebuilding," McGrady said.

Weisbrod said teams started calling the Magic about the pick Thursday. Pulling off such deals is easier said than done. The top pick has been traded only twice since the creation of the lottery in 1985.

"It all depends on who they can get," McGrady said.

McGrady rattled off some trade scenarios for the No. 1 pick, and most included shot-blocking defenders. Blocking shots and defending are Okafor's strengths, but McGrady wonders if Okafor can have a major impact, given he'll be a rookie and wants to play power forward.

McGrady, who turned 25 Monday, is still torn. He talks about leaving, but in the next breath becomes emotional, and says he really doesn't want to go anywhere.

"I don't want to leave Orlando, not at all," he said. "Man, I'd love to win here more than anything."

But he also is determined not to go through another losing season, much less champion a rebuilding effort. "I can't do that again. I'm just sick sitting here having to watch guys in the playoffs," he said. "It just eats me up."

The Magic are trying to put together a franchise shattered by a league-worst 21-61 season.

McGrady was asked just what it would take for him to stay in Orlando.

"That would take, like, a big man who gets 15 [points] and 10 [rebounds] every night and blocks shots . . . to have a defensive stopper on the wing, a solid point guard and a guy who can knock down open jump shots to prevent the double-teams," he said.

McGrady longs to play with a dominant big man such as 7-foot-6 Rockets center Yao Ming, and for a club that needs a superstar to climb into contention. Houston made the playoffs as a seventh seed this season. "I really don't need much to work with; look at our team that got a 3-1 lead on Detroit [in the playoffs last season]. . . . Guys who know how to play the game and will play hard and guys who are coachable."

McGrady can opt out of his seven-year, $93-million contact after next season. Weisbrod wants T-Mac to decide if he wants to stay before the start of training camp; if not, the club will try to accommodate his trade request.

McGrady said he'll have an answer around mid-July, after free agents are signed. The Magic have a $5 million middle-class exception to spend.

If he's indeed serious about the deadline, McGrady will not have a chance to gauge Grant Hill's health. T-Mac said Hill, recovering from a fourth left ankle surgery, was "the key" to him making his decision.

Hill said Friday that he won't start serious training until late July or early August. Said Hill, "I really would like the chance to finally play a whole season with Tracy. I hope we both can."

LOL, dream on, T-Max. The Magic ain't trading that pick.

I'm starting to sour on him too, although I still think there's about a 30% chance he winds up in Phoenix.

No No No!!!

you guys need to pay attention to the "quotes", not the authors words!

THIS IS AWESOME NEWS!!!

First off, yesterday when they asked him about the 4 teams (SA,LA,Hou,PHX), he said it was "half right". The author speculated LA & SA. Today, He is QUOTED as saying NOT SA or LA. The author again speculated that must mean indiana or detriot (didn't quote him). Assuming Tmac doesn't change his mind every day, if you do the math, 'half right' not including SA & LA leaves houston and PHOENIX!!!

Now think about this, he gives a list of 2 teams to the Magic to work a deal with, better offer wins. Our package is now competing with Steve F. And Cat Mobley (they can't offer anything else and have the salaries work). The chances of us getting him just went up 10 fold!!!

I AM SO HAPPY!!!!!!!

Interesting article. All T-Mac wants is to go to a team with

"a big man who gets 15 [points] and 10 [rebounds] every night and blocks shots . . . to have a defensive stopper on the wing, a solid point guard and a guy who can knock down open jump shots to prevent the double-teams,"

Amare. 15-10 but average shot blocker.
Marion. Good defender on the wing, but would have to be dealt.
JJ. Good defender on the wing, but not a "stopper." Decent outside shooter.
Casey. Can hit the outside shot, but not a starter.
Barbosa. Cannot be called a "solid point guard" yet.

Sounds to me like T-Mac wants to play for Indiana. (JO, Artest, Tinsley and Reggie).

He says that he won't make his decision until mid-July. That means we have to make up our minds about Kobe, the draft, and other FA's before we really start thinking about T-Mac.

Is it my imagination, or is T-Mac beginning to sound like another 6-7 guard from Orlando that we just unloaded?

You forgot "with injury issues." I think a bunch of us are starting to have the same imagination.

I wish that meant that it's less likely that the Suns will acquire him, but, alas, it doesn't.

I used to think Phil Jackson was the most confusing guy in the NBA, but I think T-Mac is making a run at it. Everybody he talks to comes away with a different story and he ends up contradicting himself in mid sentence.

T-Mac can certainly play, but I'm beginning to wonder about his intelligence.

Vince Carter said the same things about Chris Bosh last year--how he didn't want to play with a project, and the Raptors should trade the pick.

Once Bosh was there and showed his quality, VC changed his mind, and it wouldn't surprise me if McGrady did the same with Okafor.

Yeah, 'cause the Raptors turned out really well this year. At least they have a solid coach and GM in place. I mean...at least they have a coach and GM in place. I mean...oh, forget it. The Raptors suck.

You forgot they are based in canada. ;)

If not for Vince Carter and his marketing ability they probably would have been moved already. Just like the Grizzlies.

Vince gets a player option in... 2007. He could complain, but had no leverage.

BTW, I don't think I'm the only one that was surprised at how quickly Bosh developed. Now if Detroit had taken Bosh instead of Darko... :D

Are you sure about that? I thought Vince was one of the ones who wanted the Raptors to pick Bosh.

And Slin, basketball is a lot more popular in the Toronto area then you think. IIRC, their attendance was rated in the top 4 a few years ago when they were good. But even last year when they sucked they always had decent attendance. A lot more than what can be said for a lot of current NBA teams.

The only problem is the exchange rate, so it costs them a lot more to pay their players. The same for all Canadian sports.

Actually Tracy McGrady sounds like Jason Kidd to me. He since he is a great GM. Remember all of those great moves Jason Kidd orchestrated (Penny Hardaway, Alonzo Mourning, Mutombo, and Rodney Rogers)?

Originally I thought there was a decent chance of McGrady coming to Phoenix. Now I do not. I don't think the Suns will be willing to give what Orlando will expect which is at least Shawn Marion and Joe Johnson. At this point I really won't be disappointed either.

Depends on the draft though.

If we pick Iguodala or Josh Smith and we are sold on either the Suns are probably willing to trade Marion and Johnson for TMac.

If we pick Ben Gordon they would probably not be willing to trade Marion and JJ. Maybe Marion and Barbosa or Marion, Milos and Zarko.

If we sign Kobe we might still want to trade Marion or JJ but not for TMac.

According to the GM of the Magic, for the Suns to acquire Tracy the trade must include Amare. If thats true, the Magic can keep McGrady for all I'm concerned.

Do I still think the Suns have a decent shot at getting McGrady? Yes, because as of this point the Magic pulling a power move but if, as expected, McGrady says that he will not re-sign with the Magic the power goes away from the Magic and then goes to the potential teams that he is willing to play for. It would tough to take the PR hit of having a player play for you for a season even though he says he wants to leave and the possibility of losing him for nothing after being done with that season.

There have been some reporters around here that have said that McGrady has called the Suns team office about a month ago and told them he wants to play for the Suns. So take it for what its worth because nobody except McGrady knows what team he really wants to play for. All we are getting now is speculation.

Evil_Ash, when and where did the Orlando Magic GM say that the sons would have to include Amare Stoudemire in a deal for Tracy McGrady? I have yet to see where he has named any specific players he would expect in return from any team.

That's a rumor courtesy of Marc Stein. Of course I can't remember him ever writing something positive about the Suns really.

 sorry, I miswrote that. It was actually second-hand info from a reporter (I think from an Orlando radio station), I heard on KDUS a few days ago.

You're right, the Magic GM has publicly only that they want him back and hopes to get the situation resolved.

Although it was a mistake on my part, it further proves my point in that we have no idea where Tracy wants to play and/or what the Magic want in return. Its just guessing and speculation at this point
