As the Augusta National Women's Amateur gets set to etch another chapter in its early history, a big batch of newcomers are hoping to be included in those memories.
The sixth edition of ANWA kicks off Wednesday, April 2, at Champions Retreat Golf Club in Evans, Georgia. The field of 72 players will compete in 36 holes of stroke play before a cut is made to the top 30 and ties. Every player will then get to participate in a practice round at Augusta National Golf Club on Friday, April 4, before those who made the cut will play in the final round on Saturday.
There are 33 newcomers in this year's ANWA field. In the five editions of ANWA, three of the champions have won it in their first year (Jennifer Kupcho, Tsubasa Kajitani, Anna Davis). The highest-ranked newcomer is Soomin Oh, who's eighth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. There are plenty notables, too, like Scarlett Schremmer, Catherine Rao and Suvichaya Vinijchaitham, a standout freshman at Oregon.
Experience at Augusta National matters, but for these first-timers, they're looking to prove its not everything.
