There is a lot of talk coming out of New York that Carmelo Anthony will exercise his player option after this season and leave the hopeless Knicks. The common belief is that he will go to LA and team up with Kobe. Most of us probably hate Melo and think that he is a selfish player and a cancerous teammate, but lets not forget Barkley's reputation prior to him coming to Phoenix.
So here are the questions:
1. Would McDonough and the front office target Melo?
2. Would Melo come to Phoenix?
3. What are your thoughts?
1. I definitely think McDonough could target Melo, but only if we miss out on one of the top swing players in the draft.
2. As I stated earlier, the smart money is on LA, but I am not so sure he would want to go there. I don't see him signing with LA as long as D'antoni is the coach. That's obviously an easy fix for LA, but their lack of talent is not. He would be in an arguably worst position then he currently is in NY and would have to deal with an aging Kobe.
If Phoenix finishes on the cusp of the playoffs, their young talent and draft picks could appeal to him and allow us to build a team contender around him.
3. Melo in Phoenix would only work if he is in the similar place in his career as Barkley was in Philly. He'd have to be able to sacrifice the limelight and play team basketball on both ends of the floor. You can't deny his offensive talent and I like Horny's chances in getting Melo to buy in. Adding him to our roster along with some other complementary pieces (especially a power forward) would give us a 5 year contending window with a bridge to the future with guy like Bledsoe, Goodwin, and hopefully Len.
