Task Manager is indicating a very high level of PF Usage. Over 1GB where it is usually in the 300 to 400k range.

Anyone have any idea why that might be happening?

I looked at that and nothing was indicated as using anything other than what I normally see when checking processes. That's one reason I posted here.

Anyway I restarted the computer and it's back to the normal level. It took much longer than normal to shut down though.

My computer always does weird stuff- like tells me it is closing some program I never heard of when I shut down. Too much Cardinal stuff on it probably.

Thanks for the help.

Do you have a memory leak? Had you opened and shut down a lot of programs before this happened? Had you left it on for a couple of days without powering down? This is an old problem for most operating systems. I'd been told that neither OSX nor Vista suffered from this, but I've witnessed it happening to both. It seems to happen less to OSX than Vista, though, because Vista is a memory hog to start with.

Never heard of memory leak in Linux, but I don't have enough experience to vouch for that.

That could have been the problem. It had never happened before. I think a lot of the recent problems with the computer started when my daughter downloaded the myspace IM software.

My AvG scans have been picking up a lot of Trojan Horses lately could a TH cause that?

AVG is great for anti-virus and all but for stuff of this nature I run HiJackThis It is a much better way of cleaning out that stuff that should not be running. Other than going through your registry and running MSConfig a few times...

not very... just make sure you read what the found item in question does before you select to remove it... It brings up everything so you could easily remove something that is needed... or that you added on purpose that most people hate.

It offers to back up before you make your selections and you can always set a restore point before you do it, then go back if you have problems. The explanations are pretty good though and it warns you if it thinks you are trying to remove something that may be vital.

Reviews say over and over Hijackthis is not for novices. How computer savvy do you need to be to utilize the software?
If you run Hijackthis and don't understand everything it spits out, there's a button to save it as a text file. Just copy and paste that and I'm sure one of our wizards can tell you if the program finds something wrong.
