I just watched it. I liked it, but it was way too similar to Boyz n the Hood, which I liked much more than this. It was much more grittier, which I liked, but I just didn’t have the same amount of emotional investment in the characters as I did in Boyz.

My sentiments exactly. I have seen Boyz about 25 times or so; the forgettable Menace only once.

This movie is great.. A lot of classic lines came out of it.. Ive seen Boyz N The Hood about 200 times and this one prolly just as many.. I really dont know how to compare the two.. Id say Boyz was more of a public service announcement and Menace went a lil bit more into it as far as violence.. Boyz really had no violence except for the ending.. Menace got alot more into the surroundings of the projects, while Boyz just mainly focused on the main characters and how tragidy can happen to anyone..

Boyz N the Hood is one of my favorite all time movies. I really liked how Singleton got into how growing up with a single parent in a certain environment can shape your adult life, but it doesn't have to if you have the right parent.

I saw Menace once, I liked it, definitely more hard core, but yeah it wasn't nearly as good as Boyz.

IIRC even Boyz wasn't "original" there was a movie called South Central that predated both movies I think that was about the same thing, just not nearly as good.

I agree. However I have seen Menace countless times and Boyz N the Hood only a few. I can probably still recite every word to Menace. Matter of fact I don't even call it Menace. To me and some of my friends it is only know as what Samuel Jackson has on his wallet in Pulp Fiction. Can't say the actual words on the board for obvious reasons.

I found this movie: http://imdb.com/title/tt0105450/ , but it came out one year after Boyz.

Thanks my memory was off then. Apologies to John Singleton. South Central was about 2 best friends who form a gang in LA when they're quite young and it winds up being one of the bigger gangs around. ONe goes to jail, and when he gets out he sees his son getting sucked into the gang and tries to get him out. It was pretty good, not as good as Boyz.

I remember reading that there was talk of a sequel to Boyz but it would appear nothing ever came of it.

Menace was ehhhh. An up and coming Larenz Tate was the best thing in that movie. The dude that played Kain was horrible, which explains why he's nowhere to be seen.
