Donna Shalala, Paul Dee and the hiring committee just covered their hind ends big time.

Just maybe they hired a consultant and found out no one of prominence wanted the job. Maybe the reality of the program was made quite clear. No money, no facilities, national perception problems, unsolved mysteries, terrible sports administration, lack of alumnae base, fading attendance and a myriad of other negatives.

Randy Shannon may be the best hire. Randy Shannon may be the only one who would take the job. We may never know. Shalala and Dee will do their spin dance and bask in the glory of their self serving decision. Good for Randy. He got the job. In the meantime, he is part of a grand social experiment. I hope he has the temperament of Jackie Robinson on this one.

Columnists, pundits and sportswriters will have a field day with this one and the sideshow will continue at the U of Miami. This was a no brainer for the brain trust at Miami. They come off as the good guys while the program they created spins around out of control.

Good luck Randy. You will need it. Get an ACC Championship and a BCS berth and they will throw you a well deserved parade. Turn in a mediocre season and you will be thrown to the wolves. The odds are against you. Sorry, but that may be the reality.

How the mighty have fallen.

Wally, how do you think Randy will do as a recruiter? IMO recruiting is king in college football. Coker is a good coach. He was a good coach as a OC, he was a good coach when he won the NC. The main problem was he wasn't bringing in the top players and the talent level at UM did a nosedive. Without the players, though, his Xs and Os don't mean much.

Miami might make a few inroads back into the local area, which is now competitively mined by just about every program east of the Rockies. I think the difference there will be negligible. I don't feel Randy will be effective nationally. South Florida provides speed players, but does not provide d and o linemen. That needs to be addressed out of state. Randy is a hard working recruiter but his organizational skills, if existent, remain a mystery. I am still haunted by the lasting effect of the Brawl. Those were mainly "his" defensive players participating in the mayhem and the majority of those who were suspended. I suspect this will have a major negative effect on many recruits families decision. Miami needed a complete breakaway from the past staff, but instead hired from within, and perpetuated the perception and style. I believe Randy's mindset had a much higher influence on the reason for the brawl, not Coker. He is a player's choice coach. These player's don't desrve that choice. They screwed up off the field and underachieved on the field.

The last 2 classes of Coker's were phenomenal. It was the 2 years prior to those that sucked. The last 2 classes were bolstered by some new assistants brought in, primarily Pete Garcia and Mario Cristobal. Pete is now the AD at FIU, post brawl, and he is tugging at Mario as the new HC to replace the fired Don Strock. That will have a major impact.

Randy Shannon will need a miracle to be successful. BTW, his press conference was embarassing. Lots of rah rah crap and absolutely devoid of any substance. It was a kissathon.

IMHO

Shannon was a horrible hire and does nothing to gain "in-roads" into cleaning up the thug like perception. This is a guy a few years back who came across the table at one of the U of M coaches threatneing to beat this sh^t out of him.

The guy is a major jackass.
