Tempe, Arizona — Arizona Cardinals Vice President and
General Counsel Michael Bidwill will receive the 2003
Glenn S. “Pop” Warner Award at the 43rd annual Pop
Warner Awards Dinner at Disneyland in Anaheim,
California on Saturday evening, May 24.
The event, sponsored by Pop Warner Little Scholars,
Inc. (PWLS), honors the academic accomplishments of
more than 4,000 student-athletes ages 10–15, and
recognizes individuals with ties to the Pop Warner
Little Scholars Program who have gone above and beyond
in the lives of children as a positive influence and
role model.
Named after Glenn S. “Pop” Warner, the Warner Award is
presented to an individual who has achieved excellence
in athletics, scholarship, and life’s endeavors with
integrity and humanity.
Bidwill is being recognized for his support of youth
sports in Arizona. In a recent edition of the Phoenix
Business Journal, the Cardinals were recognized for
their proactive hands-on community efforts. So far in
2003, the Cardinals already have staged 117 kids’
camps, 10 player kids’ camps, 17 reading programs, 10
mathematics programs, 15 stay-in-school programs, two
“To Play It Smart” programs at Glendale and Chandler
high schools, and made 10 visits to children’s
hospitals.
Additionally, Bidwill was instrumental in the passage
of Proposition 302 in 2000 that created the Tourism and
Sports Authority (TSA) which has earmarked $73.5
million over 30 years for youth and amateur sports in
Maricopa County. Already, the TSA has funded two
projects currently under construction—a regional sports
complex in Avondale, Arizona, and outdoor athletic
fields at the South Mountain YMCA in south Phoenix.
The TSA also has broken ground on the new stadium for
the Cardinals and Fiesta Bowl in Glendale.
“The Cardinals and other stakeholders were honored to
promote and include youth sports as part of the stadium
vote,” Bidwill says. “We’re already seeing the fruits
of that effort with more to come. There is no greater
investment than the futures of our youth.”
Adds Vicki Gamby, commissioner of the Arizona Pop
Warner Football Federation since 1999, “The Arizona
Federation is very proud of Michael Bidwill and the
contributions he has made to our organization on behalf
of the Cardinals.”
Past NFL recipients of the Warner Award include Kansas
City Chiefs General Manager and Chief Executive Officer
Carl Peterson (2002), Jacksonville Jaguars owner Wayne
Weaver (2001), Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt
(1997), Chicago Bear Hall of Fame linebacker Dick
Butkus (1995), NFL Films President Steve Sabol (1994),
NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue (1993), broadcaster and
ex-Eagle Irv Cross (1982), and former team owners Joe
Robbie (1984) and Edward J. DeBartolo, Jr. (1985).
Other past recipients include college coaching legend
Eddie Robinson, former NCAA President Richard Schultz,
former U.S. presidential candidate H. Ross Perot, Duke
University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the
University of Notre Dame.
The Warner Award is one of four major annual awards
presented by Pop Warner Football. This year’s other
major recipients are Miami Dolphin running back Ricky
Williams (Glenn S. “Pop” Warner Inspiration To Youth
Award), former Cincinnati Bengal punter Pat McInally
(The Gold Football Award), and former Olympic gymnastic
gold medalist and cheerleading spokesperson Amanda
Borden (Female Achievement Award).
Headquartered in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, PWLS is the
largest national youth football and cheerleading
organization in the United States and the only youth
sports organization that emphasizes academics as an
equivalent to athletics. Currently there are over
360,000 children in Pop Warner organization in 41
states, Guam, Germany, Russia, Japan, and Mexico.
