DENVER — Michigan basketball opened the game with a 10-point run, weathered a vigorous second-half rally and survived UC San Diego on Thursday night in a 68-65 win in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
UCSD had a chance to tie it but missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds. Vlad Goldin scored 14 points for Michigan.
The 12-seed Tritons, making their first March Madness appearance, slashed a 14-point halftime deficit (41-27) to one (45-44) at 14:40 remaining, but the 5-seed Wolverines composed themselves and the lead quickly ballooned back to 10.
Yet UC San Diego rallied back to take its first lead 65-63 with 2:29 left as Michigan smoked free throws all night (11-for-20). Tre Donaldson (12 points) hit a 3 in response at 2:13 to give U-M a 66-65 lead.
The Wolverines move onto the second round of March Madness on Saturday against 4-seed Texas A&M, which beat 13-seed Yale 80-71 earlier in the night.
