Members of the Michigan men's gymnastics team took the field in the afternoon at the Michigan football spring game and proclaimed how they would later win the national championship that evening just one building to the East at Crisler Center.

Sure enough, they were men of their words, as No. 2 Michigan took home the 2025 national championship by scoring 332.224 points, holding off Stanford (322.061) and Oklahoma (327.891) as well as a trio of Big Ten squads in Nebraska (326.222), Penn State (317.258) and Illinois (316.293).

This is the seventh national championship in program history and the first since 2014 after Stanford had won five consecutive titles.

U-M, which won its fifth Big Ten Championship in a row earlier this week, trailed Oklahoma after three rotations as everything came down to the final performance of the night. Paul Juda, one of the stars of the team, calmly approached the vault and recorded a 13.966 to secure the win for U-M and send his teammates into a frenzy.

Michigan’s Fred Richard, who was the youngest man in USA Gymnastics history to win a medal when he claimed bronze in the all-around at the 2024 Paris Olympics, won the individual all-around competition (84.264) thanks in large part to a season-best 14.400 on vault. Juda also was a bronze medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Richard and Juda helped to lead the United States men's team to a bronze medal at those Olympic games.

Juda took home second in the individual overall (82.164), but that was the only place he came up second. After the meet, videos around social media show Juda call his girlfriend Reyna Guggino (a member of U-M's women's gymnastics team) onto the floor where he proposed and she promptly accepted.

This marks the first team national championship for U-M since the football program won the 2023 national title after an undefeated 15-0 season.
