ATLANTA — Michigan State basketball went from unranked to one win from the Final Four of 2025 March Madness.

But the Spartans' great season under head coach Tom Izzo ended in the Elite Eight on Sunday in a 70-64 loss to Auburn at a heavily orange-clad State Farm Arena in the South region final.

MSU got as close as six with 11.2 seconds left, but it was far too late. Jaxon Kohler had 17 points to lead the Spartans, who shot terribly in the first half and finished at just 34.4% overall and 30.4% from 3-point range (7-for-23).

Johni Broome's 25 points led the Tigers and coach Bruce Pearl, who advance to the Final Four in San Antonio next Saturday night against Florida (6:09 p.m.). Houston and Duke will meet in the other national semifinal (8:49 p.m.).

All four teams are No. 1 seeds, the first time since 2008 this is the case.

MSU (30-7) trailed at the half, 33-24, for the 13th time in its past 17 games yet had been 12-4 previously. But the Spartans never quite recovered from a 17-0 run by the Tigers (32-5) that made it 23-8 in the middle of the first half.
