Michigan State welcomed in Notre Dame to Munn Ice Arena on Saturday night for the Big Ten Tournament semifinal matchup. On Saturday night, the Spartans defended home ice and defeated the Fighting Irish, 1-0, moving on to the Big Ten Tournament championship.
The win by the Spartans put a fitting, and poetic end to Notre Dame head coach Jeff Jackson's career, who is retiring after this season. Jackson began his career as a player at Michigan State, learning under legendary head man Ron Mason.
The lone goal from the Spartans came just 19 seconds into the third period, when a powerplay marker from Isaac Howard broke the scoreless tie. The goal was assisted by Matt Basgall and Karsen Dorwart.
Trey Augustine on the other hand added another shutout to his resume, saving all 18 shots Notre Dame had on goal in the game.
Michigan State will host the Big Ten Tournament championship game next weekend at Munn Ice Arena against either Ohio State or Penn State.
