A trade that would've sent Mickael Pietrus from the Phoenix Suns to the Toronto Raptors has been called off because Pietrus had knee swelling after a workout for the Raptors, agent Bill McCandless told the Arizona Republic.

The Suns had agreed to send Pietrus, who will make $5.3 million this season, to Toronto with cash for a conditional second-round pick.

McCandless said the trade has been "postponed" and that Pietrus did not fail his Friday physical exam, but the Raptors flagged something in Pietrus' surgically repaired right knee that prompted them to call off the trade

McCandless said Pietrus now plans to return to Phoenix, join the Suns and undergo rehabilitation on the knee.

Yes. Toronto will likely to look elsewhere to fill their need. Pietrus will rehab presumably with Suns staff.

There is really no place for him on this team

No argument there. That's why I was thrilled he was traded to Toronto. I think the Suns are stuck with him unless some team wants him at the trading deadline because of injury.

As long as he can't play, it won't really make a difference if he is on the roster or not. The Suns will do their best to help him rehab and then they'll try to trade him again. The problem is that by then most teams won't have any cap space left to take his contract on.

Maybe Pietrus will decide to play when healthy and put forth a better effort since this is the last year of his contract.

I know... I know.

Just thinking back about the proposed Pietrus trade to Toronto. I bet BC tried to suck a first or second round pick out of the Suns with the injury thing, but luckily (at least for now) they didn't bite.

I don't understand. If he had a workout with the Raptor and then had the swelling, why would the trade be void and he returned to the Suns?

The trade was not consummated because he did not pass the physical.

Waive him. Maybe someone will pick him up. He's an expiring that might have some value.

Someone might pick him up, but not off waivers. That's $5.3M for an injured player who isn't that good to begin with. He would clear waivers and someone would sign him for the minimum, with the Suns still paying his full salary.

I was maybe hoping that someone might have to pick up a little risk free salary to get the league minimum. I haven't looked at where everyone is though. Not likely. Still, makes sense to waive him. His presence is just a distraction.
