Microsoft offering Surface RT tablets for $199 to educational institutions

Just a heads up for anyone that works for any K-12 or higher education institution...

You can just walk in to the Microsoft store, fill out a form with your name and where you work, flash your work id, and give an employee id number...pay...and walk out with a Surface RT for a great price. They even discount on accessories like an extra case/bag for your Surface. One Surface per school id.

I dig my RT. I bought it on release day and kind a wish I had waited. But the updates MS has pushed out since release have really made this a great tablet. There are some stupid things that MS did that I'm hoping 8.1 and Outlook will fix, but otherwise it's a solid tablet, especially at the new prices.

My one suggestion would be to skip the keyboard cover unless you really plan to use it like a laptop/netbook. I purchased the combo and quite frankly only use the cover for transit to protect the screen. It's just easier to thumb type for me.

Did you get one?

Yes. I got one and my wife did too. :jedi:

Saw a couple of my co-workers in there getting theirs also. Called a former co-worker who is in a different district and he went in last night and got one.

Interesting. I haven't really looked at these at all. Do they run the full office suite?

How does it compare to working with a standard labtop?

They have a RT version of Office but no Outlook.

On RT applications only install from the Windows App store.

If you are looking for a laptop like experience you will want the Surface Pro.
RT version is more like an android or iOS device.

Office works just the same as the Pro or a laptop. If you want a laptop experience, skip the Pro and get a laptop as you'll get a better keyboard.

Outlook is en route to RT. I was hoping it would arrive prior to 8.1, but it looks like that's when it'll come to RT.

But, Outlook for RT is in dev and coming.

I love it. It is working as both my tablet and PC depending on what I need it for. I went back to the Microsoft store today and got the HDMI to USB and can do duel monitor with it. Well worth it, so much so my Laptop has not been used since I got this.

Too late for you, but for anyone else - find someone you know that works in an educational setting, but is not going to take advantage of the deal, have them go to the store and buy it for you (using their credentials). That way you get the RT (and accessories) at the great discount.

I got just the Surface for $200. I'm very pleased and looking forward to the OS update coming in October which will remedy a few flaws. Make sure you get everything you want on the first trip. You only get the discount pricing one time. If you decide to go back and get accessories you have to pay full price.

Brian, I also got Windows 8 and Office 2013 both for $20 here: http://susd.onthehub.com/WebStore/ProductsByMajorVersionList.aspx
Having these installed on my PC is kind of cool. It gives you the same look as the Surface. Every app you buy for the Surface can also be installed for free on your PC.

When I got my school ID, they gave me an employee ID my mistake. I tied to use it, but the Microsoft store in Portland required the school to make the purchase at one time through the school.

10 day later and I have turned on my laptop twice, just to get some files. My Surface has completely replaced Laptop. I can even RDP into my server at home and do some development work that way.

Bing 'Refurbished Surface RT' every once in a while. You can get them with the touch pad for under $200 from licesnced dealers when they refurbish enough of them.

I meant the $10 windows 7 and $10 windows 8 on that website Devil posted.

I have a android tablet that I bought last christmas. I want an upgraded one as I didnt realize the age of the model and the limitations that put on me but because of the recent purchase tablets are way back on the ol priority list.
