Mikayla Blakes of Vanderbilt women's basketball was named the USBWA Tamika Catchings National Freshman of the Year, the organization announced Tuesday.
Blakes will be honored at the Final Four.
In February, Blakes set the NCAA Division I freshman single-game scoring record when she scored 55 points in an overtime win over Auburn. Blakes also set the SEC and Vanderbilt single-game record with that performance. She was the only Division I men's or women's player to have a 50-point game this season.
Blakes averaged 23.3 points per game, second in the SEC, along with 3.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.4 steals per game. She scored in double digits in all but one game this season.
A 5-star recruit in the 2024 class, Blakes chose Vanderbilt over basketball blue bloods like Tennessee and Stanford. She was named a 2024 McDonald's All-American, joining former McDonald's All-Americans Justine Pissott and Jordyn Oliver on the 2024-25 team.
MARCH MADNESS Why Vanderbilt's March Madness disappointment is reminder of program's progress and needs
Among her other accolades include being named SEC Freshman of the Year, First Team All-SEC and a Second Team All-American by the USBWA and a Third Team All-American by the AP.
